Amazing Animal Moms

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Here at Kids Club headquarters, we’ve got moms on our minds – animal moms, that is!

Animals care for their young in so many different ways. Here are just a few animal moms we think are pretty cool:

Chickens

Believe it or not, hens begin talking to their chicks while they’re still in their eggs! The chicks let their mom know when they’re cold.

She responds by moving or turning the eggs. Then, when she hears a purring-like sound, she knows they’re content. By the time the chicks hatch, they already know their mom’s voice.

Rattlesnakes

rattlesnakesSnakes have a reputation for being cold-hearted as well as cold-blooded. But did you know that female rattlesnakes take good care of their babies – and each other’s?

When rattlesnakes are born, they’re pretty vulnerable. The females protect them from predators.

They watch over the young snakes as they explore and make sure they don’t wander too far from the den. The females also keep the young snakes warm by coiling up around them.

Octopuses

Female octopuses guard their eggs – tens of thousands of them! – for months on end.

mother octopusShe never leaves them, not even to eat. She blows water over the eggs to provide them oxygen. She gently cleans them with her suckers to keep them free from algae. And, when her babies are finally ready to hatch, she blows them out into the open ocean.

Human moms are pretty great too, so we’ve got some animal-themed Mother’s Day cards (choose from a cat, dog, rabbit or bear) for you to print out, colour, fold and give to the amazing mom in your life.

Furry Friends

Bunny brothers Brothers and best buds Apollo and Orion found themselves in our care when, sadly, their guardians no longer had time for them. These fun-loving boys are friendly and playful. They’ll make wonderful companions for a family who can give them the attention they need. Do they sound like a good fit for yours? You can meet the boys at the Burnaby SPCA.

Like all rabbits, Apollo and Orion will require lots of space to hop around and toys to keep them busy. Not sure what else it takes to be a great rabbit guardian? Check out our Rabbit Care Guide!

Please note: Apollo and Orion were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have found their forever home since then.

Visit the BC SPCA website to find more furry friends currently looking for homes.
