Wild about babies!

who am I?

With summer nearly here, baby season will soon be in full swing across the province. All sorts of wild animals – from swallows to snakes to seals – raise their young during the warmest months of the year when there’s plenty of food around.

How well do you know your baby wildlife? We want to put you to the test! Check out the photos and clues above. Send your best guesses to kids@spca.bc.ca, using the subject line “Wild About Babies.” Get four or more correct answers, and you’ll be entered in a draw to win a canvas print of the cutest black bear cub you’ll ever see! This contest is open until July 31, 2016 to all BC SPCA Kids Club members. Remember to include your name, age and city with your answers, too.

Not a Kids Club member? Sign up today and you’ll never miss out on any fabulous contests like this one again!

Camping with Cats

Cat tent

Yup, you heard us right: camping with cats! After all, why should dogs have all the fun?

Summer can be the perfect time to head to the great indoors for a camp-out – oops, we mean camp-in! – with your kitty. And we’ve got just the thing to get you prepped: a cozy homemade cat tent! All you’ll need is a cardboard box, two wire coat hangers, masking tape, wire cutters, pliers and an old t-shirt. Visit spca.bc.ca/activities for step-by-step instructions.

What sorts of activities could you and your cat do together on your indoor camping trip? For starters, we think cats would love playing shadow puppets (or just playing with the flashlight beam on the floor because, hey, they’re cats!). You could also read aloud to your cat from one of the many animal-themed books we’ve recommended in Bark! magazine.

We’d love to hear – and see – what adventures you get up to on your kitty camp-in! Send your stories and photos to kids@spca.bc.ca.

Let's Paw-ty ideas

Let's Paw-ty! ideasDogs are pretty awesome. So are birthday parties. Put them together and what do you get? An amazing dog-themed birthday party, of course!

Want to host one when your next birthday rolls around? Here are just a few doggone good ideas to help you celebrate:

  1. Serve all of your party snacks in dog bowls. You could even label the food with names like “dog chow” (great for chocolates), “pupcorn” (for popcorn, of course) and “chew sticks” (perfect for licorice or pretzels).
  2. Have a cupcake-decorating station for you and your guests to decorate cupcakes to look like dogs.
  3. Give your guests dog stuffies to “adopt” – complete with collars, leashes and adoption certificates. You could make special ID tags for the stuffies too.
  4. Ask your guests to donate old towels and blankets for dogs in need at your local shelter.
  5. Invite some well-mannered pooches you know to the party too! You could even make some pumpkin pupcakes to share with your canine company.

What sorts of fetching ideas do you have for hosting a dog-themed birthday party? Let us know at kids@spca.bc.ca!

Gone Batty

Little Brown Bats Summer is a great time for reading – and, for us animal lovers, nothing beats a good animal book! We’ve got one we think you’ll go batty over: The Case of the Vanishing Little Brown Bats by Sandra Markle.

Little brown bats, once one of the most common bat species in North America, are mysteriously dying in vast numbers. Can scientists find the culprit in time to save them? Or is it already too late? One thing’s for sure: if little brown bats disappear for good, our ecosystem will never be the same.

Think you’d like to help bats in your backyard? Visit bcbats.ca to find out how you can attract bats, build a bat house and even take part in a nighttime “bat count.”

Do you have any animal books on your summer reading list? Tell us about them at kids@spca.bc.ca!
