Cool Treats for Hot Dogs

fruit popsicle

Just like we do, dogs love a cool treat on a hot day! When the weather warms up, try making these drool-worthy pupsicles for your panting pooch:

Berry smoothie pupsicles: Blend together a cup of plain yogurt, two cups of berries (like blackberries, blueberries, raspberries or strawberries – or a mixture of these!) and two tablespoons of honey.

Peanut butter and banana pupsicles: Stir together a cup of plain yogurt, a third of a cup of peanut butter and half a banana (mashed).

Pumpkin pupsicles: Mix together a cup of plain yogurt, a can of pumpkin puree, a teaspoon of honey and a whole banana (mashed).

Just pour the mixtures into ice cube trays, freeze and serve! For an extra treat, use a baby carrot or a dog biscuit as the popsicle stick.

Remember that these pupsicles are treats, so it’s best not to feed too many at one time! One per day is a good start.

CONTEST ALERT! Send us a photo of a dog enjoying one of your homemade pupsicles and we’ll enter you in a draw to win a dog-themed popsicle mold. Mail your entries to e-Kids Pupsicle Contest, 1245 East 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5T 1R1 or email them to kids@spca.bc.ca. This contest is open until August 31, 2016 to all BC SPCA Kids Club members. Remember to include your name, age and city, too.

Seal pups

seal pupDid you know that, each summer, baby seals are accidentally pup-napped?

Seal pups are born on land, where they spend a lot of time sleeping and staying warm. Their mothers leave them alone on the beach for short periods while they return to the ocean to look for food. While some seal pups do get injured and need help, many others are “rescued” by people who mistakenly think they’ve been orphaned or abandoned. Seal mothers then watch helplessly as these well-meaning rescuers pick up and walk away with their perfectly healthy babies.

You can help keep seal families together! Print out and colour our “Please don’t pup-nap me!” poster. Hang it up (with permission) to encourage others to help seal pups only when they really need it.

Don't let your buns bake

Keeping bunnies cool

Summer can be a dangerous time for rabbits. They overheat easily because they don’t sweat and they can’t pant very well. Instead, they cool themselves by releasing heat through their ears. The problem is, when it gets too hot in the house, even their ears can’t keep up!

Help keep rabbits safe and comfortable this summer by sharing the tips above with your family and friends.

Can you think of any other ways to keep rabbits cool in the heat? Email your ideas to kids@spca.bc.ca, using the subject line "Keeping Rabbits Cool."

Which wheel?

e-Kids_July11 2016_3 Hamster wheels_640x210.jpg

In the wild, hamsters are very active animals who travel many kilometres each night, looking for food. Because we can never give our pet hamsters that much space to roam, we give them wheels instead. Wheels help hamsters get exercise. And, because they stay up long after we’ve gone to bed, wheels also give hamsters something to do while we’re asleep and can’t play with them.

Wheels are clearly important to hamsters, but there are so many different types. How do you know which one is the right one for your hamster?

small hamster wheelWhen choosing a wheel, just remember the two SSs: surface and size. Solid surfaces – like all-plastic wheels – are safer and more comfortable than wire ones, which can hurt their feet. As for size, when hamsters run, their back shouldn’t be arched into a U-shape – that means the wheel is too small! Running like that can hurt their back.

Whatever wheel you pick needs to be large enough and comfortable enough for your hamster to run on. After all, he’ll be spending a lot of time on it!
