Animal Jokes ‘n’ Riddles

animal illustrations

Guess what, e-Kids readers? The fun doesn’t have to stop just because summer is over! Crack up your friends and family with these animal-themed jokes:

What do you call an alligator in a vest? An in-vest-igator.

What did the beaver say to the tree? “It’s been nice gnawing you.”

What is a cheetah’s favourite food? Fast food!

Why did the police officer give the sheep a ticket? She made an illegal ewe turn.

What did the mother buffalo say to her son when he left for school? “Bison!”

How are dogs like telephones? They have collar ID.

How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh? Ten tickles!

Why don’t bears wear shoes? What’s the use? They’d still have bear feet!

Want to make us laugh? Send your own animal jokes to kids@spca.bc.ca. They could be featured in an upcoming issue of e-Kids!

The bird is the word

Bird quizHere at Kids Club headquarters, we love birds. From tiny darting hummingbirds to huge soaring eagles, we just can’t see or hear enough of them! It’s a good thing we live in British Columbia, isn’t it? Our province has more species of birds than any other province or territory in Canada.

Do you have birds on the brain just like we do? Well, we’ve got a challenge for you! Check out the puzzle above. Unscramble the letters to identify the birds in the photos. Send your answers to kids@spca.bc.ca, using the subject line “Bird Word Scramble.” Get six or more correct, and you’ll be entered in a draw to win a pair of Celestron® binoculars, perfect for bird watching! This contest is open until October 31, 2016 to all BC SPCA Kids Club members. Remember to include your name, age and city with your answers, too.

Not a Kids Club member? Sign up today and you’ll never miss out on any fabulous contests like this one again!

Toys from the trash

Small animals like rats, mice, gerbils and hamsters need to have their minds and bodies kept busy. But guess what? You can entertain your petite pets without spending a lot of money – in fact, you can just raid the recycling bin!

Boxes: Cereal boxes, shoe boxes and tissue boxes all make great hiding places. Just cut an entrance hole large enough for your pets to fit through. Tape some boxes together to create a fun clubhouse!

Paper bags: Paper bags are fun to rip apart. Crumple them up or leave them open for your pets to explore.

Newspapers: Newspapers make awesome nesting material. Fold one into a tent and watch as your pets tear it to pieces.

Paper rolls: Toilet paper and paper towel rolls are great tunnels. They’re also easy to chew and perfect for hiding treats in.

Can you think of any other items from the recycling bin that would make an interesting activity for small animals to do? Email your ideas to kids@spca.bc.ca!

Furry Friends

Jumper

Introducing Jumper and Runner, September’s Furry Friends of the Month! Sadly, they found themselves at the Victoria SPCA when their guardian no longer wanted to care for them. But we know these special boys will be wanted again by a loving family – maybe yours?

Jumper and Runner are outgoing, confident guinea pigs who always want to be right in the middle of the action. When they are, they get so excited that they actually jump! The boys would love a home where they get lots of attention and out-of-cage playtime.

Like all guinea pigs, Jumper and Runner will need a large habitat to live in and plenty of fresh greens to eat. Not sure what else it takes to be a great guinea pig guardian? Check out our guinea pig care guide!Runner

Please note: Jumper and Runner were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have found their forever home since then.

Visit the BC SPCA website to find more furry friends currently looking for homes.
