Book Review

Out of the Cold

by Valerie Ingram & Alistair Schroff

illustrated by Amanda Moeckel
Reading level: Kindergarten-Grade 3

Out of the Cold follows the journey of Billy, Anna and their grandfather as they try to create a safe and warm environment for their dog, Molly, after she breaks her chain and is hit by a car. Anna designs a doghouse and enlists the help of the community to build them for all the dogs and cats living outside. Although the best place for pets is inside, the group works to protect those animals living outdoors in the meantime.

Out of the Cold is based on the work of Lakes Animal Friendship Society in Burns Lake, B.C. This book shows the impact that one child can have when they try to improve the lives of the animals around them.

With an ideal happy ending for Molly, roots in true events and beautiful illustrations, this book is an inspiration to those who love pets.

School Club Tip

eTeacher_Jan2017_cupcake day_300x338jpg.png

It’s that sweet time of year again! So get your baking pans out because National Cupcake Day is coming up on Feb. 27.

This January and February, your school can join thousands of animal lovers (across Canada!) by hosting a cupcake party to fundraise for animals in need.

If your school has a food policy that doesn’t allow sweet treats, try making savoury muffins or scones – less sugar, more protein and a great way to even get some of your daily veggies. Check out these tasty recipes to get you started.

Current Events

eTeacher_Jan2017_Current Event_300x300.pngThe reality of this cold winter is that some animals are suffering. Take Ms. Shivers, a kitten who was found abandoned in -30 °C weather. When we took her to the vet, they discovered that three toes on her right front foot had severe frostbite. This highlights the need for pet guardians to keep their pets indoors where they can stay warm and safe.
