Being a cat guardian can be a wonderful experience, full of fluffy fun and lots of love. Before getting a cat, though, it’s important for families to know what they need and how much it costs so they won’t be caught off guard. Think you know what it costs to provide for a cat? Take our quiz!

Gross.png

There’s no shortage of interesting animal facts… and lots of them have the added bonus of a gross-out factor. The spring issue of Bark! magazine features a full page of “Freaky-but-Fascinating Animal Facts,” inspired by the Get the Scoop books by Dawn Cusick, but there were plenty we didn’t have the space to include. Here are just a few:

• Every animal needs tiny organisms called microbes to help them digest food. But when elephants are born, their intestines are sterile – meaning they don’t have the bacteria they need. To get this important bacteria, baby elephants eat adult elephants’ poop. Forget fruits and veggies; their first solid meal is usually a mouthful of their mother’s dung!

• Comfy-cozy mucus blankets? Yup! Parrotfish burp up mucus before bedtime to sleep under. It protects them from hungry eels, who seem to lose their appetite after tasting the mucus. We can’t say we blame them!

• Camels are known for spitting when they feel threatened. But did you know their “spit” is not just from their mouth? It’s actually vomit brought up from their stomach and mixed with their saliva, then projected at whoever is bothering them to say, “Back off!” It smells awful, and it works!

Furry Friend.png

e-kids_Adeline_300x300.pngMay’s Furry Friends of the Month are Alicia and Adeline, a pair of three-month-old rats staying at the Richmond SPCA while they await their permanent home.

Alicia and Adeline are a friendly, energetic pair looking for a home together. They like to sleep cuddled up close and explore the world side-by-side. Alicia is the more outgoing of the two while Adeline is a little shy. Both are smart, curious and like to meet new people at their individual pace. They will make a great addition to the right family!

Please note: Adeline and Alicia were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have found their forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA adoption website to find more furry friends looking for homes.
