We’re in the middle of “kitten season” at the SPCA. Small, soft, playful, and those little mews they make are just to die for! So how can too many kittens possibly be a bad thing?

The truth is, there are more kittens and cats in need of homes than there are people who can provide them. This is what we call overpopulation. Every year, litters of kittens are dropped off at the shelter because no one can take care of them.

What is the answer to overpopulation? Spaying and neutering our cats before six months of age! By doing so, we can prevent unexpected litters of kittens, freeing up more homes for cats already in shelters.

Take Action: If your cat is not already spayed or neutered, talk to your parents about booking an appointment with your veterinarian. Tell others about the cat overpopulation problem and remind them to “fix before six”!

At the BC SPCA, we love to celebrate animals and how amazing they are for just being them. While dogs get a lot of attention (we know why – they’re wonderful!), sometimes cats are given less recognition as individuals and family members. So we want to know: What do you love about your cat?

Fill in the blank: My cat is paw-some because _______.

If you don’t have a cat of your own, but you still think they’re pretty purr-fect, tell us: Cats are cool because _______.

Send us your answers (along with a photo and the name of your cat if you have one) by June 15, 2017 to kids@spca.bc.ca with the subject line Cats are Paw-some Contest. Our favourite entry will win a fun cat-themed prize - include your full name and address to be eligible.

This contest is open to all BC SPCA Kids Club members. Not a Kids Club member? Sign up today and you’ll still have a chance to enter!

eKids_World Enviornment Day–Colin Franks.png

Every year, a host country is chosen to be the centre of World Environment Day celebrations around the planet. This year, the host country is… you guessed it… Canada!

World Environment Day is June 5, and the theme this year is Connecting People to Nature. You can get in on the celebrations and connect to nature right now! Have the chance to contribute to the world’s biggest nature photo album by sharing a photo or video of your favourite place in nature. Or head out into your backyard and join people from all over the world as you tally the amazing species sharing our planet.

Want to keep on connecting to nature this year? In honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary, admission to Canada’s National Parks is free for 2017. It’s as easy as ordering your family’s free pass online!

e-Kids_Opie.pngJune’s Furry Friend of the Month is Opie, an orange tabby cat available for adoption at the Kamloops SPCA.

Opie arrived at the shelter as a stray. While he had a tattoo, it could not be traced to an owner, and no one ever came to claim him. So, Opie is now searching for a new family to call his own. He’s very talkative, cuddly and likes people. He’s not so keen on other cats so is looking to be an only kitty in the household.

Please note, Opie was available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found his forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA adoption website to find more furry friends looking for homes.
