Be ready for your next book review! This year, if your teacher asks you to review a book of your choosing, why not make it a book about animals? We’ve got lots of suggestions for picture books, novels and even non-fiction research books on our Pinterest page.

One of our favourites is The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. It is about a wild-born gorilla who lives, and works, at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Though he has an elephant friend named Stella, a dog friend named Bob and a young human friend named Julia, Ivan lives alone in his cage. He is the only gorilla he knows. One day, a baby elephant named Ruby is brought to the Big Top Mall. Other changes happen, too. Ivan starts to see his world differently. What if wild animals aren’t meant to live in captivity, after all?

If you read one of our suggested books, we’d love to know what you thought! Or maybe you have another favourite book about animals that you think could be on the BC SPCA list. Email us at kids@spca.bc.ca with your recommendations and reviews.

We’ve had a busy summer here at the BC SPCA. We loved learning about animals with you at camp, and meeting so many of you as you delivered donations to your local shelters. Your birthday parties, lemonade stands and bake sales make such a difference for the animals. While we sadly don’t have space to recognize everyone, here are a few of our recent champions for animals:

Aimee raised $40 for the Port Coquitlam SPCA at her birthday party.

Kennedy, Scarlett and Lola donated $90 from their lemonade stand to the Campbell River SPCA.

William asked for donations instead of gifts for his birthday and raised $80 for the Vancouver SPCA.

High Paws, everyone!

ekids_Furry-Friend_Ginger-and-Nibbles_300.pngSeptember’s Furry Friends of the Month are Ginger and Nibbles, a pair of male guinea pigs looking for a home together.

Through no fault of their own, Ginger and Nibbles have ended up at the West Vancouver SPCA. While they are just three years old, Ginger and Nibbles have already been through several homes in their short lives. These cuties will make a great addition to the right family. We hear they like people and enjoy saying good morning!

Please note, Ginger and Nibbles were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have been adopted already. Visit spca.bc.ca/adopt to see all animals looking for homes.
