connect students around the world banner.jpg

e-logo_300x300.pngRemember pen pals? Maybe you are too young, but it was the old-fashioned way of communicating through letter writing. A teacher would find a same grade class from another country and students would write back and forth to learn about each other’s daily activities, cultures, similarities and differences.

These days, the world is so much more connected with technology than it used to be, but how many young people are connecting with others around the world? We need to connect with those who are not within our inner circle so we can see other people’s view.

Empatico is a new, free video tool for teachers and students to connect around the world. This video will explain how to get started. What a great addition to any inquiry learning project!

Students in Mme Mullin’s grade 6 class at École Phoenix Middle School formed a school club to help animals all year round.

First, the club held a Halloween bake sale and raised $379.50 for the Campbell River SPCA! Next, they collected supplies like blankets, towels and toys for the shelter, and then they raised another $805 by selling handmade holiday products at their Christmas Entrepreneur Fair.

As a registered BC SPCA Animal Club, École Phoenix Middle School submitted an overview of two projects and sent in photos of the projects, which earned them a school club banner.

Why not start your own club this year? We have ideas on how to get started.

Flood-warning_300x436.pngFlood Warning
by Jacqueline Pearce, illustrated by Leanne Franson

Reading level: First novel – Grade 3+

A young boy saves his family’s dairy herd from a flood with the help of his dog, Amos. This is an exciting, easy-to-read chapter book based on a real situation that happened when British Columbia's Fraser River flooded in 1948.

Teacher extension: The novel is told from the perspective of the boy, Tom. Have students write the story from the point of view of the mother cow or her calf, or from the perspective of Amos the dog. How does the little calf feel when water starts to creep over the farm and she is separated from her mother? Does Amos feel like a hero when he is asked to help lead the cows to safety, or is he just having fun as usual?

Current-Event_Gloria-Lodge_Grizzly.png2017 saw some significant gains in the fighting animal cruelty and improving animal welfare.

In December, the City of Vancouver banned the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits. Delta, Richmond, New Westminster and North Vancouver already have bans in place. Surrey is currently considering a similar ban.

More than 6,000 BC SPCA supporters showed their concern by letting the provincial government know how they felt about the grizzly hunt and that banning trophy hunting didn’t go far enough. On Dec. 18, the Province of B.C. announced the end of the hunting of grizzly bears throughout British Columbia, a move applauded by the BC SPCA.

The BC SPCA’s cruelty investigations department took in 100 animals from cruelty cases in December alone. One of those cases involved an extremely emaciated mastiff, found shivering in the cold, tethered outside, surrounded by ice and snow, on Dec. 20. Within hours of his story being spread by media, a single donor, Kymar Gutters Inc. in Langley, generously donated $4,200 to cover the total medical costs associated with his care.
