e-kids_GP-and-cat-banner_640_REV.pngValentine’s Day is right around the corner, so be sure to shower animals with love this month!

Did you know that animals develop deep friendships with each other?

Some shelter animals, for instance, come from the same home, where they developed close friendships. These duos are sometimes known as bonded pairs.

This month, we want to tell you about a few of the bonded pairs at the BC SPCA that need a forever home together!

Hairy and Cuddles are two guinea pig brothers. They are best buddies, and enjoy cuddles, greens and spending time with humans. These two are available for adoption at the Surrey SPCA.

Balto and Anni are husky siblings looking to find a home as a duo! These active pups are both great with kids, and can be found at the Prince Rupert SPCA.

Wizard and his sister Witchie are looking for a loving home together. Wizard is curious while Witchie is a little more cautious. If you have the home and time for two, you can visit them at the Maple Ridge SPCA today.

Please note: These bonded pairs were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have found their forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to find more furry friends currently looking for homes.

Chocolate is everywhere around Valentine’s Day, but remember that it is toxic to many animals, including dogs and cats!

Be sure to keep any chocolate treats away from your pet this February.

Instead, bake your buddy a treat full of healthy, pet-safe ingredients.

To make Doggy Doughnuts, assemble:

• 1 egg (ideally SPCA Certified, Certified Organic or cage-free)
• 2/3 cup beef or chicken broth
• 2 cups whole wheat flour
• 3 tbsp quick cooking oats

1. Grease a shallow, microwave-safe plate or baking dish. Set aside.
2. Whisk together the egg and broth in a large bowl. Gradually stir in the flour and oats.
3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out cookies using a round cookie cutter. Use a smaller round cookie cutter to cut out the centre doughnut hole. Place the cookies on the greased plate or dish without crowding them too much.
4. Cook in the microwave a few minutes at a time until the doughnuts are firm. Cool on a wire rack.
5. Repeat until all the remaining dough is used up.
6. Store in a sealed container in the fridge.

When Akbash/Labrador retriever mix Conrad was left on the doorstep of the Central Okanagan Dog Control Service in Kelowna, he was already 10 years old. He was cleaned up and given medical care before being transferred to the Shuswap SPCA. Once there, he captured the heart of his forever guardians: two seniors looking for an older gentleman or lady. Here’s what Conrad’s forever family has to say about him:

Conrad is now fully at home here on Vancouver Island. We have acreage and a large woodlot. He is the sweetest dog. He is rapidly learning our ways, and we his.

Sometimes it seems like we have been together for years. As a livestock guardian dog, even though he is a senior, he is alert and poised on our porch.

A very hairy fellow, we are learning about sweeping and not wearing black pants!

Thank you to Victoria at the Shuswap shelter, and her husband Dean, who brought him down to the coast to our local BC SPCA Comox Valley & District Branch.

Do you have an adoption “tail” you’d like to share? Email us a story and photo and your pet could be featured in a future issue of e-Kids!
