Dogs need to stay cool and hydrated when hot weather rolls in! But although we humans love this frozen treat, not all ingredients in ice cream are ideal for dogs. So instead of letting your pup have a lick of your cone, spoil him this summer (in moderation!) with his own dog-friendly treat.

Tips: Yogurt is a better alternative to milk or cream. Better yet, look for yogurt made from dairy alternatives like soy or coconut!

Try out cool flavours such as:

Gone Bananas
1 cup plain or dairy-free yogurt + 1 mashed banana + ⅓ cup natural, unsalted peanut butter

Pumpkin to Talk About
1 cup plain or dairy-free yogurt + 1 can pumpkin purée + 1 tablespoon honey

Appley Ever After
1 cup plain or dairy-free yogurt + ¼ cup finely grated carrot + ½ cup plain, unsweetened applesauce + ½ cup plain cooked oatmeal

Berry Delicious
1 cup blueberries + 1 mashed banana + 1 cup plain or dairy-free yogurt + 1 tablespoon honey

Remember, dogs cannot eat certain foods such as chocolate, coffee and raisins. Check out other fruits to avoid here.

To prepare, blend the ingredients together and pour into a container such as an ice cube tray. Then let it freeze for a few hours! If you want, make yourself some soy milk ice cream at the same time so that you have something to eat yourself. When the ice cream is frozen, get both treats out and sit down to eat them with your pup. Now both of you can enjoy the taste of summer!

Contest alert: Take a photo of your pup having a dog-friendly ice cream! We’ll enter you in a draw to win a cookbook for dogs. Email your entries to kids@spca.bc.ca with the subject “e-Kids Dog-Friendly Ice Cream.” The contest is open until July 7, 2019 to all BC SPCA Kids Club members. Remember to include your name, age and city, too.

Not a Kids Club member? Sign up today and you’ll still have a chance to enter!

Are your pets wildfire-ready? During summer, wildfires can endanger pets, farm animals and wildlife all across B.C. The BC SPCA works hard to do everything we can for animals during the summer. We set up emergency dog care sites to house animals displaced during the fires. BC SPCA Special Constables also help to evacuate animals who are behind fire lines.

You can do your part to help by making sure your own pets are prepared in case of an emergency. Print this disaster planning checklist and show it to your family. Thinking ahead will really make life easier for you and your pets!

In the meantime, keep your pet safe in everyday life by looking out for these summer pet hazards.

e-kids_4)-Lefty-and-Ofelia_300.pngLefty and Ofelia are the cutest mother and daughter duo! These sweet bunnies came into our care when a passerby found them as strays along with the rest of Ofelia’s litter. Ofelia’s other babies were all adopted, but these two are still waiting! They love spending their days together munching on yummy veggies and hay. Since they’re very bonded, they’d like to find a home together. If you’re interested, go check them out at the Penticton SPCA!

Not bunny-savvy? Brush up on your knowledge with our rabbit care guide or take this small animal quiz to see which small animal is best for you!

*Please note: Lefty and Ofelia were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have found their forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to find more furry friends currently looking for homes.
