This Halloween, keep an eye out for decorations of animals who people consider “scary.” What kinds can you spot? Chances are you’ve seen animals like spiders and other “creepy crawlies,” bats, black cats and rats. But are these animals really “monsters”?
In reality, bugs play a vital role in our ecosystem. Black cats and rats make excellent pets. And bats are more like Batman than vampires! They clean up the streets, have a sense of justice and even adopt orphans. They also have an archenemy of their own—check out 5 Ways Bats Are Just Like Batman to find out who this joker is.
Whenever you see an animal represented a certain way in the world, try reading more about them. It may surprise you to find out they’re quite different in reality!
What breed of dog do you like best? A border collie or a Pomeranian?
When some people decide to adopt, they are drawn to a certain breed because they have seen one in a movie or on TV. But it’s important to do your research first! Border collies can be very high energy dogs. They will need a lot of exercise. Pomeranians tend to require a lot of grooming. This can be expensive. Is your family ready to make those kinds of commitments?
Above all, it’s important to keep an open mind when it comes to adopting a dog. Find a dog that fits your personality and lifestyle rather than just focusing on appearance.

This spring, the BC SPCA rescued Senkō and 41 other neglected horses from a B.C. property. At the time, Senkō was only six months old. He was scared and sick from living in bad conditions his whole life. Even after veterinarians treated him, they still worried about Senkō’s health. They decided he needed specialized care. So a foster parent, Kristi, took him home to recover. Even though Senkō was so sick, Kristi was amazed to see that he still wanted to bond with her.
When Senkō became available for adoption, Kristi jumped at the chance. She welcomed him into her home, where he is now recovered and thriving. Thanks to animal lovers like Kristi, Senkō has a happy ending. To read Senkō’s full story, click here. You can also share your own pet’s adoption story!
