e-kids_Dog-senses_300.pngTouch. Hearing. Smell. Taste. Vision. How much do you know about a dog’s five senses? See how you do on these true or false questions.

1. Puppies are born deaf and blind.

True. A dog’s fur is connected to highly sensitive nerve endings, so puppies first rely on their sense of touch to feel their way around.

2. Dogs can hear footsteps.

True. And not only that, their hearing is so good, they can tell the sound of one person’s footsteps from another!

3. Dogs can detect COVID-19.

True. Dogs can sniff out COVID, as well as other diseases such as diabetes and cancer. In one recent study, trained dogs were better at detecting positive COVID cases than rapid antigen tests.

4. Dogs have more taste buds than humans.

False. Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds, while humans have 9,000. No wonder dogs don’t seem to mind eating off the floor!

5. Dogs see only in black and white.

False. Dogs see the world in hues of blue and yellow. It’s hard for them to find a green tennis ball in green grass!

Check out these past Bark! articles to learn even more awesome facts about a dog’s five senses.

Winter will be here before we know it! In some areas of B.C., the temperatures are already dropping below freezing. One simple but important thing we can do to help animals in the cold weather months is to remember to “think and thump” before getting in a vehicle.

When it gets cold outside, animals living outside look for warm places to sleep. Sometimes that place can be under the hood of our cars! Before you get in a car on a cold day, remember to tap or lightly thump on the hood (front) of the car. This warns any animal resting there to move along. Wait a few moments after tapping to listen for noises of escape before starting up the car.

To spread the word, you can make your own posters or flyers to share in your community. Our Think and Thump activity includes ideas for messages and flyer templates you can cut out and place under people’s windshield wipers. Help educate your community this winter and keep animals safe!

e-kids_Oct-21-workshops_300.png

Bogey came to the BC SPCA with bad allergies making his skin swollen tight and uncomfortable. He needed help, fast! Luckily, a team of veterinarians gave him the right medications and a special new food. He was on his way to feeling better.

Next, Bogey needed a foster home. Melissa and her four-year-old son, Richard, were the ones for the job. When Richard and Bogey met, it was love at first sight: “It was like they had known each other forever.”

Melissa has been taking good care of Bogey, cleaning his eyes, ears and skin folds every morning. The better he feels, the more his personality comes out, which Melissa calls “special and charming.” Bogey and Richard are the best of friends. Once he has been neutered, the family hopes to adopt and make it official.

Described as a “nothing but sunshine” by staff at the Powell River SPCA, Marnie is looking to share her light and warmth in a new home.

This affectionate two-year-old has been waiting for more than two months now for her purrfect family. She loves to play, whether with a human friend, other cats or just by herself! Marnie also enjoys time on her own to watch the world out the window, and delights in naps and snuggles.

Marnie is good with other cats and dogs, and has also lived with kids before. She gives and happily receives love, and is expected to transition well into almost any household.

If your family is interested in learning more about Marnie, visit her adoption profile.

Please note that Marnie was available for adoption at the time this article was written, and could have found her forever home by now. To see all animals looking for homes, visit spca.bc.ca/adopt.
