BC SPCA summer camps are back for 2024! At these camps, every participant has at least one thing in common: We all love animals!

If you’re between the ages of six and 15, check out the programs being offered this year. Depending on your age and location, you might sign up for a one-day workshop, mini camp, full five-day camp or one of our virtual programs.

At camp you’ll enjoy games, crafts, guest speakers, and time with select approved animals. You’ll learn a lot and have a ton of fun! But don’t just take our word for it. After attending camp last year, one kid said, “If it was between this or a video game camp, I’d pick the SPCA camp!” Another who attended multiple different camps ranked BC SPCA camp the best of the summer!

Registration is open now, and spots are filling fast. For a full list of available programs, and to register, visit spca.bc.ca/camp. Have questions? Contact our camp team at camp@spca.bc.ca.

Then:

Just before Christmas, six puppies were brought to the Chilliwack SPCA when their guardian realized they could not care for them. These Great Pyrenees, border collie mix puppies weren’t old enough to be adopted yet, so the SPCA put out a call for volunteer foster homes. It can be hard to find volunteers around the holidays, but luckily, three foster volunteers stepped up to take two puppies each.

Now:

All six of these puppies have found their forever homes! The BC SPCA recently received and shared updates about four of them. Here is part of the update about one of the pups, Gnocchi, from his guardian, Giovanni:

“That first meeting was super cute,” says Giovanni. “I couldn’t say no to Gnocchi.” Giovanni adds that when he was a kid, his family had a golden retriever named Bailey and Gnocchi reminded him of that dog.

Giovanni says that Gnocchi is a big boy now. “He is only four and a half months old and he is already more than 40 pounds,” he says. “He loves food, but he loves people more than anything. Every time he sees someone, he runs up to them and then immediately flips over onto his back looking for a belly rub.”

Read all four of the updates the BC SPCA has received about these sweet puppies.

Rise Up and Write It, written by Nandini Ahuja and illustrated by Anoosha Syed, is a captivating story that will inspire you to take action! The protagonist, Farah, is a curious and determined youth who notices an absence of butterflies in her neighborhood. Through investigation, she discovers a crucial factor: a lack of flowers. Farah doesn't stand idly by—she decides to take action for her community, benefiting both butterflies and humans alike!

Rise Up and Write It is more than just a story. It includes six envelopes filled with examples of Farah’s activism tools, such as a letter to the mayor and a ready-to-sign petition! With this book you can follow in Farah’s footsteps to spark change.

Earth Day is coming up on April 22! Like Farah in the book Rise Up and Write It, you can take action to help butterflies and other pollinators. Celebrate Earth by adding pollinator-friendly plants and flowers to your home or school garden!

The recent Bark! magazine article, The Power of Pollinators, shares facts about why pollinators matter so much. One out of every three mouthfuls of food we eat is due to the efforts of pollinators! We also talk about the threats facing pollinators, actions we can take to help, and specific ideas of what to plant.

With spring upon us, this is a great time for the activities mentioned in the article, including:
Pollinator seed bombs (these make great gifts, too!)
Nest helpers
Bee baths

Happy Earth Day, happy planting and happy helping!
