May 2014
May
is Be Kind to Animals Month (BKTAM). To help schools and communities celebrate,
the BC SPCA sent out a package to all teacher and public librarians that
includes a list of recommended books, BC SPCA bookmarks and a “Dare to Care”
poster. Check to see if your school received the package and then encourage
your students to choose a book on the recommended list or another book about
animals this month.
We’d
love to hear your feedback on the BKTAM
package. Did your library have a display of animal-themed books? If so, send us
a picture. Did the students like the bookmarks? Are the books in your school
library or will they be purchased? What suggestions do you have for next year’s
BKTAM package for schools?
Why not have some fun and raise awareness about Be Kind to Animals Month? Here are some ideas:
- Hold an “Animal Dress-Up Day” where students can wear animal costumes or paint their faces like their favorite animals. Award prizes for the best costume!
- Once a week, make a school-wide announcement about an interesting pet fact.
- Plan a vegetarian or SPCA Certified potluck for club members.
- Create animal welfare-themed posters to hang in the school hallways, then have a scavenger hunt! Ask students to find answers from each poster for the chance to have their name entered in a prize draw.

Ever
wonder what wild animals do when they think no one is watching? Now you can
find out. From playful raccoons and curious otters to birds, deer, mink and
more, the cameras are now rolling at Wild ARC.
Five different animal cameras are mounted in enclosures with one live streamed
at a time – allowing viewers to see the seasonal changes with our patients, as
last year’s baby otters grow up and are released this spring and new raccoon
and deer young arrive.
