The Bookshop Dog
by Cynthia Rylant
The Bookshop Dog, written and illustrated by Newbery
Medal winner Cynthia Rylant, is a colourful story about Martha Jane, a bookshop
dog who is loved by everyone she meets. When Martha Jane’s guardian becomes
ill, she must find someone to care for her pet for a week. This doesn’t prove
difficult. Everyone in town clamours to become Martha Jane’s sitter, with some
over-the-top results!
The Bookshop Dog is a charming tale with bright,
simple illustrations, sure to please young audiences. Readers in Kindergarten
to Grade 2 will enjoy the descriptions and drawings of the book’s characters,
especially the townspeople: well-meaning but not always well-behaved folks who
demonstrate just how silly people can become when they really, really love an
animal.

The BC SPCA is excited to announce the official opening of its new Community Animal Centre in Campbell River. The SPCA centre will provide sheltering and adoption for homeless and surrendered cats, kittens, small animals and as many dogs as can be accommodated, while Coastal Animal Control will continue to be responsible for pound services in the city.

Campbell River has one of the largest cat overpopulation problems in B.C. and we have been taking steps to help the community address this issue. Branch manager Stephanie Arkwright has already arranged for the sterilization of 750 cats under the program, which will have a significant impact on the number of kittens and cats dying needlessly in the community.
The Campbell River SPCA also plans to expand its fostering program for incoming animals and its humane education programs for youth.
This
is a good way to introduce the topic of feral cats and cat overpopulation. New lessons on pet overpopulation for grades four to seven will be available soon.
