Do you want to help animals when you grow up? There are lots
of different things you can do! Here are just a few of the jobs you can get
working directly with animals:
|
Animal shelter worker: Help the most vulnerable animals.
Care for pets who have been abandoned, abused, injured or lost and adopt them
into loving homes.
|
|
Veterinarian: Be a doctor for sick or injured animals.
Examine pets, prescribe medicine, perform surgeries and spay and neuter animals
to help prevent pet overpopulation.
|
|
Dog trainer: Teach dogs good manners. Use positive reinforcement (giving rewards for good behaviour) to provide basic training to dogs, and work with their guardians,
too!
|
|
Wildlife rehabilitator: Give injured and orphaned wild
animals a second chance. Treat their injuries, teach them the skills they need
to survive in the wild and release them back into their natural habitat.
|
|
Animal protection officer: Investigate cases of cruelty and neglect, educate people about treating animals humanely and remove animals from dangerous situations.

Each year on November 11, we observe Remembrance Day. This
important day is about honouring the brave men and women who have sacrificed
during times of war. Did you know that millions of animals have also served?
Here are the stories of three individual animals awarded the Dickin Medal,
which is the highest honour a war animal can receive:
Gustav, a pigeon who served during the Second World War, was
the first to deliver word to the British mainland about the D-Day invasion on
June 6, 1944. Gustav flew for five hours and sixteen minutes to deliver the message.
Olga, a horse who served with the police in London during
World War II, was awarded the Dickin Medal for her role in assisting rescue
operations and controlling traffic after a bombing.
Gander, a Newfoundland dog who served with the Royal Rifles,
saved the lives of Canadian infantrymen three times during a battle in Hong
Kong in 1941.

We’ve recently updated our High Paws Hall of Fame!
Congratulations to all of our new inductees, including these three superstars:
November’s Furry Friend of the Month is two furry friends – best
buddies Willow
and Peanut.
Willow and Peanut are a pair of Dachshunds looking for a
home together. Willow is very outgoing and playful while Peanut is more of a
quiet lapdog. They’re both very sweet, and are staying at the West Vancouver SPCA until they
find their forever family!
Please note: Willow and Peanut were available for adoption at the time this
article was written, and may have found their forever home since then. Visit
the BC SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently
looking for homes.
