New-Year's-resolutions-dog-run-snow200.jpg

It’s never too late to start good habits. For 2014, why not make humane resolutions that help those without a voice?

There are plenty of things you can do to help animals large and small, wild and domestic. If you need help deciding how you can help, check out our list of New Year’s resolutions and start making a difference.

It’s easy and delicious to participate in National Cupcake Day, taking place on Feb. 24 this year.

Register today and plan a cupcake party at work, home, or a virtual party online; start fundraising by encouraging friends and family to donate online in advance; bake your favourite cupcakes; share them with family and friends, and collect donations to prevent cruelty to animals. Visit www.nationalcupcakeday.ca to learn more.

Run to benefit the BC SPCA

Great news! The Vancouver Sun Run has chosen the BC SPCA as one of just three charitable partners for this year’s event.

This means you can run in support of your favourite animal charity by registering and making a personal fundraising page. What an amazing way to start the year and make a difference in the lives of animals in need.

Make better beef choices in 2014

Label claims can be confusing: free-range, grass-fed, pasture-raised, naturally-raised. These terms are frequently displayed on meat products, but what do they mean, and which one should we choose?

Want to know the secret behind a meat product that will benefit human health, as well as improve animal welfare and environmental sustainability? Find out today.

BC SPCA cat box wins international award

HPG-box-award-cat-200.jpg

The BC SPCA's Hide, Perch & Go box has recently won an international award for its contribution to cat welfare from UK-based International Cat Care (formerly the Feline Advisory Bureau).

The Hide, Perch & Go box is a welfare enrichment tool used in animal shelters, catteries and veterinary clinics to reduce the stress of cats housed in typical shelter cages.

New Code of Practice will improve sheep welfare

curious-sheep200.jpg

The BC SPCA was involved in developing the new Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep, which is now available through National Farm Animal Care Council.

We are especially pleased to see new requirements for pain control during procedures such as tail docking and castration. Approximately one million sheep were raised in Canada last year.

Donor of the month

Edgewater Donor of Month January.pngThank you to Edgewater Casino and Rob Montgomery for teaming up to hold a hugely successful fundraiser, the sixth annual Blues for Paws, in support of Charlie’s Food Bank.

This wonderful evening of dancing and musical performances raised more than $10,000. Montgomery and Edgewater Casino truly exemplify the BC SPCA spirit by speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Paw Patter

Paw-Patter-January-dog-in-snow200.jpgIs your pet at risk? Some pets are more susceptible to the cold than others. Hypothermia is more common in small breeds, as well as very young or old animals. Pets with short hair, wet fur or low body fat are also at risk.

Ultimately, though, all animals are vulnerable in cold weather. Remember to keep yours warm and dry this winter!
