It’s Small Animal Month at the BC SPCA – when we take extra
time to spotlight the amazing small animals who need homes! Here are just
three small animals up for adoption right now:
|
Ferdinand
Currently featured as our Pet on the Net, Ferdinand is "one of the friendliest rats you'll ever meet"! He is available for adoption at the Richmond SPCA.
|
|
Tilly
This delightful guinea pig likes to cuddle, and we hear she even knows a few tricks! Tilly is staying at the Kelowna SPCA until she finds her forever home.
|
|
Liam
Liam is a calm and friendly bunny who is looking for a home for himself and his true love, Beatrice. They are waiting at the Comox Valley SPCA.
|
Note: These animals were available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found their forever homes since then. You can find more animals available for adoption online.

Rats

1. Purring isn’t just for
cats. These small animals purr when feeling content! They are also known
to make other vocalizations, like squeaking, chirping and grunting.
|
Hamsters
|
2. These small animals need
lots of space to burrow. They love to make tunnels in their bedding and
then race around “underground.”
|
Rabbits
|
3. Despite a bad reputation
for being dirty, these small animals actually keep themselves very clean!
And of all pet rodents, they are probably the smartest.
|
Guinea pigs
|
4. These small animals live
the longest of any petite pet – 8 to 12 years.
|
Gerbils
|
5. These small animals are
nocturnal, meaning they sleep when you’re awake in the day, and wake up
when you’re asleep at night!

Sometimes it seems like dogs and cats have all the fun. Pet
supply stores are brimming with toys for Fido and Fluffy, but what about small
animals? They need to play, too!
There are special toys you can buy for your little critter, as well as
ones you can make yourself. Check out these ways
to play with small animals.
And, in case you missed it in last spring’s Bark! magazine, you can
transform your bathtub into the most amazing small animal play gym! All you
need is an old towel and a bunch of “gym equipment” you can find in your
recycling bin, like egg cartons, paper towel rolls and cereal boxes.

It often takes a while for a small animal to find his or her
forever home. Rabbits stay at the shelter for an average of six months before being adopted. So when
a small animal finds that perfect match with a new family, it’s a happy occasion
indeed!
Bazil was adopted earlier this year after more than six months at the Williams Lake SPCA. Even though
the staff there loved to cuddle her, they were thrilled for her when she
finally left the shelter to go live with her new guardians. In her new home, Bazil
has a whole bedroom to herself, where she can choose to play, or just snooze
the day away. Congratulations on your new home, Bazil!
