Small Actions, Big Difference

Maybe your family has a cat, dog, small animal… or all three! If so, we bet you’re already a great guardian. But did you know there may be fun little things you can do to make their lives even better? Here are a few ideas:

Puppy

What dog doesn't love a tasty treat? You can bake treats for your dog at home. The secret ingredient in all homemade dog treats? Love, of course!

Kitten

Do you enjoy getting new toys to play with? So does your cat! Cat toys don't need to cost a lot. You can even make them yourself!

Gerbil

Keep your small animal from getting bored with plenty of out-of-cage exercise.

(BC SPCA Kids Club members, watch for the fall issue of Bark!, coming out next month, where we’ll give you tons of fun tips on making a gerbil habitat the best it can be!)

Whatever you choose, even these small actions can help your pets live healthier, happier lives.

Our Take Action page has even more tips on how you can, like Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Do you have more ideas on small actions other kids can take for companion, farm or wild animals? We’d love to hear them! Email us at kids@spca.bc.ca.

Walk to Fight Cruelty!

Paws for a Cause

It’s almost here! The 2014 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause takes place this Sunday, September 7* in communities around B.C.!

If you’ve already registered and have been fundraising for the big day, thank you! We can’t wait to see you this weekend as we walk to fight animal cruelty and have a blast with games, music, food, face painting and more!*

Not signed up? That’s okay. Registration is still open on event day, and participants ages 17 and under can sign up for free. Plus, if you’re 13 or under and have raised $15 or more, you’ll get a free year of BC SPCA Kids Club membership.

*Walk dates and activities vary by location; check your local walk information.

Animal Jokes 'n' Riddles

Make your friends laugh with these animal jokes!

Mooooo
"Do you feel like an action flick or a romantic comedy?"

Where do cows go on Saturday nights?
To the mooooo-vies!

Why do birds fly south for the winter?
Because it’s too far to walk!

Why does everyone love cats?
Because they’re purr-fect!

High Paws

Kids around B.C. were busy over the summer making a difference for animals. Thank you to each and every one of you! Here are a few of our new High Paws Hall of Famers:

Noah

Seven-year-old Noah Painter sent us this great picture, which he took at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. Observing and taking pictures of wildlife is a wonderful way to learn about and appreciate the animals who share the Earth, so that we can take better care of the environment for both our future and theirs.

Aislen, Nyla and Cosette Aislen, Nyla and Cosette held a birthday party and collected donations for the Maple Ridge SPCA. They raised $40 plus a whole bunch of treats, toys and bedding. The girls visited the shelter to deliver the goodies, as well as take some time to meet the animals.
Violet and Amelia Amelia and Violet are summer camp superstars! Not only did they attend a week of camp at the Victoria SPCA, but they also raised $48.50 for the animals by selling iced tea and cookies after camp one day.

Furry Friend of the Month

Tom

September’s Furry Friend of the Month is a young rat named Tom.

Tom is a very social and friendly boy. He enjoys playtime with people! Tom arrived at the SPCA with his brother, Jerry, but they prefer to live in separate habitats. Tom and Jerry are both patiently awaiting their forever homes at the Surrey SPCA!

Please note: Tom and Jerry were available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found their forever homes since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently looking for homes.
