February 2015
We’re on a mission to record one million acts of kindness this year, and we need your help!
What’s a kind act? Anything you do to help someone else! Commit to taking your dog on extra walks, pick up trash so animals won’t mistake it for food, tell a friend about the Kids Club so they can speak for animals, too... and the list goes on. Here are just a few more examples:
|
Make a
fun activity a kind one, too. Reannah made bracelets, rings and keychains with her sister, Madeline,
then sold them to raise money for the Haida Gwaii SPCA. Reannah and Madeline
are both looking forward to another kind act: volunteering with SPCA cats in the
future.

Take a
stand for kindness. February 25 is Pink Shirt Day. Wear pink
to show that you won’t bully others or accept bullying at your school or in
your neighbourhood. And when you notice someone is treated unkindly (on any day
of the year), don’t join in or ignore it. Choose to actively be kind, instead.

|
Help the
environment. When someone acts to keep Mother Earth healthy, we all benefit. If you
want a kind act that helps the earth while also helping homeless animals, do
what Jake
does. This animal lover regularly collects cans and bottles to recycle for a
refund, reducing garbage while raising funds for the Victoria SPCA.

Sign up for the Million Acts of Kindness campaign at millionacts.ca
so you can track your kind acts online and get ideas on new acts to do
throughout the year. Get your family or classmates to join you, set a
goal to reach together and tally all your acts on the
refrigerator or school bulletin board.
Tell us about your kind act (or acts!) along with a photo if
you can, and you could be featured in Bark!
magazine, e-Kids or online. Email kids@spca.bc.ca
(subject line: My Kind Act).
Remember, every single act of kindness, no matter how small
it may seem, is another step towards ending cruelty and making the world a
better place. You can make a difference!

Here’s another deliciously kind act you can do: bake
cupcakes to save animals!
National Cupcake Day
is coming up on February 23. Get in
on the fun and open your own Online
Bakery, where you can collect donations for the animals in exchange for a
sweet, scrumptious cupcake.
When you sign up at nationalcupcakeday.ca we’ll
send you a special kit with everything you need. Want to get your school
involved? Ask your teacher about hosting a Cupcake
Day Party at lunchtime.
Don’t forget to send us a photo of you and your cupcakes and
tell us how it went. You could be featured in Bark! magazine, e-Kids or online. Email kids@spca.bc.ca (subject line: My Cupcake Day).

Valentine’s Day is ALL about kindness, and telling each
other that we care. It’s something that’s important to do all throughout the
year, but it’s still nice to have a special day set aside for celebrating love!
This Valentine’s Day, show your family, friends or even your
pets how much you care (and how much you love animals) by making them a
handmade and very cute Puppy
Love Card.
P.S. Did you know we are hosting Valentine’s-themed youth
workshops at some BC SPCA branches this month? Check out spca.bc.ca/workshops for a full
listing of what’s happening in February.

February’s Furry Friend of the Month is Ginger, a one-year-old male guinea pig.
Ginger is staying at the Kelowna SPCA right now, but he’s looking for a more permanent home with a family who will keep him company and just let him be a guinea pig. Want to know more about caring for a guinea pig? Check out our Guinea Pig Care Guide.
Please note: Ginger was available for adoption at the time
this article was written, and may have found his forever home since then. Visit
the BC
SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently
looking for homes.
