What do you know about small animals?
Even though they’re often grouped together as a “type” of
pet, different small animals have different behaviours and care needs. When adopting a small animal, it’s important to pick the one that’s
right for you and your family.
|
Think you’d like a
hamster? They’re definitely cute and great for people who live in smaller
homes, but keep in mind that they are nocturnal, meaning that they’re most
active when you’re asleep, and sleeping when you’d like them to play!
|
|
How about a guinea
pig? They’re active during the day, most will like to sit in your lap and
be petted, and they even purr! They do need quite a bit of space, though – 20
square feet for a pair, or the size of a large kitchen table.
|
|
Not sure about rats?
You may have heard them called dirty, or even scary, but rats are actually very
smart, social and yes, CLEAN animals! They do best with a tall cage where they
can climb and a rat-proof room for out-of-cage exercise.

Luna was adopted as a puppy two and a half years ago – and
has come a long way since then! We received an update on her life since
adoption, written by her “sister” Emma, 10.
|
“We
adopted Luna, a border collie/husky mix at the Richmond Education &
Adoption Centre when she was three months old in October 2012. She struck
us as a playful, energetic, adorable dog and just too cute to resist.
Luna
has grown into a beautiful, smart dog with a perky personality. She loves to
fetch her ball and run around. She also loves to receive morning treats and
lots of cuddles.”

Read Emma’s full letter (including how
Luna gets along with the family’s cat, Hope!) and find even more happy stories of animals finding their forever homes.
Has your family adopted an animal? We want to hear about it!
Send your story, along with a photo of your pet, to kids@spca.bc.ca. You and your pet could be
featured in an issue of e-Kids!

March’s Furry Friend of the Month is a handsome guinea pig
named Fast
Eddie.
Fast Eddie is a quieter guinea pig who can be a bit shy
around people. The staff and volunteers at the Richmond SPCA are working with Fast
Eddie to help him feel more comfortable. He likes Timothy hay and fresh veggies,
and is getting used to being handled.
Fast Eddie is looking for the right home with a patient family who will
love him for who he is. Right now he lives on his own, but he might like a male
guinea pig buddy to keep him company.
Please note: Fast Eddie was available for adoption at the
time this article was written, and may have found his forever home since then.
Visit the BC SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently
looking for homes.
