Love is in the air
With spring around the corner, now is the time to take action and have your pet spayed or neutered. Kittens, too! Kittens can get pregnant as young as five months of age. Don’t end up with an accidental litter. At the time of neutering, make sure pets also get an ear identification tag so a lost pet can be returned to you. Pepper feels the love
A neglected pregnant pit bull named Pepper feels the love. The Nanaimo SPCA Branch, which is caring for Pepper, appealed to the public for support after learning the gentle dog had a broken pelvis and might need an expensive C-section to deliver her puppies. The community donated more than $5,000 to help Pepper and other animals at the branch, even though Pepper had five healthy babies naturally. Read more about Pepper and her puppies.
British Columbians agree: ‘It's poor taste to serve foie gras’
Since our alert about foie gras last month, we’ve heard from people across B.C. who were disappointed to see foie gras on the menu of their favourite restaurant.
Please look out for foie gras on restaurant menus. Tell your friends and family why they should not order it and ask chefs to replace foie gras with a more ethical alternative.

Recently, Bosley’s Pet Food Plus, B.C.’s leading pet specialty retailer, partnered with the BC SPCA to open BC SPCA Satellite Adoption Centres in Bosley’s stores (.pdf download) in the Lower Mainland, Victoria, Squamish and Nanaimo. Bosley’s and its customers have contributed more than $40,000 to support the BC SPCA and the Satellite Adoption Program which places available animals for adoption in Bosley's stores. The BC SPCA is grateful for Bosley’s support in finding forever homes for animals in need.

If you received chocolate for Valentine’s Day, make sure to keep it out of reach of your furry sweetheart. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate contains two to five times as much theobromine as milk chocolate, and is the most hazardous to your pet’s health.
