Make your windows safe for birds! When
birds fly into windows, it’s often simply because they see reflections
of sky and trees and think it's open space. You can help by decorating
your windows so birds can tell something is there and can steer clear.
Window decals can be purchased, but you can also create your own designs with tempera paint and stencils from the art supply store. The paint can be wiped away with a sponge but rain won’t wash it off.
Keep dogs out of hot cars – and spread the word! Check out
the upcoming issue of Bark! to get
ideas to make your own display to shine light on this important issue.
Adopt, don’t shop! This is a kind act for all year round, but good to remember at a time
when many families decide to welcome new four-legged friends into the home. If
you or one of your friends is planning to get a pet this summer, remember to
look at the SPCA or other rescue organization for an animal in need of a home.
Want to commit even more kind acts this summer? Join us at
summer camp! If you aren’t already signed up, visit spca.bc.ca/camp to learn
more. We’re hosting camps in 19 communities this year, and limited spaces are
still available at some locations.
Take a walk on the wild side when the summer issue of Bark! magazine comes out this month!
Follow Kat and Fin as they go for a walk in the woods and
spot the signs of the wild animals who live there. Plus, discover
everything you need to go for an awesome nature walk yourself. (Be sure to take
pictures so you can enter our contest to win a new camera!)
You can also learn all about herons and what you can do to
protect them, read the story of Savannah the horse, who was rescued by BC SPCA animal
protection officers and take the Make Your Match quiz to find out which small
animal could be right for you.
All this and more will be landing in the mailboxes of Kids
Club members across B.C. the week of
July 13. In the meantime, here are some wildlife-themed activities!
The 2015 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause will be a
celebration of the BC SPCA’s 120th birthday. Bring your whole family
– that means dogs, too – and join us for a fun-filled day with food, music,
games and prizes.
The walk will take place Sunday, September 13* in more than
30 communities around B.C. You can sign up online and get
started on collecting pledges to help end animal cruelty.
Registration is FREE for youth, or $10 if you would like an
event t-shirt. If you’re a Kids Club member, look to the next issue of Bark! magazine for a special,
limited-time discount code and get 40% off walk registration with a t-shirt.
We can’t wait to see you at the party in September!
July’s Furry Friends of the Month are Chubby and Clowny (picture here), two adorable guinea pig brothers.
Chubby and Clowny were surrendered together when their family could no longer care for them. Clowny is the more social of the two, while Chubby takes longer to warm up to people. Both these guys love munching on red pepper and lettuce. They are up for adoption at the Vernon SPCA.
Think you’d like to adopt a guinea pig? Learn more about proper care.
Please note: Chubby and Clowny were available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found their forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to find more furry friends currently looking for homes.
