Charges of animal cruelty are pending against the owner of an emaciated golden retriever named Trooper who was dropped off at the BC SPCA’s Maple Ridge Branch Feb. 28.
“Through our ongoing cruelty investigation, we identified the owner and we will be recommending charges,” said senior animal protection officer Eileen Drever.
Drever said Trooper is one of the worst cases of neglect she’s seen in 30 years. When he arrived at the shelter, he was 11 kilograms (24 pounds) which is one-third the size he should be. He now weighs 13.3 kilograms (29.3 pounds).Find out more about Trooper and how you can help fight this kind of cruelty.

Pets and pesticides don’t mix
With spring emerging, there may be a temptation to nip your weeds in the bud by spraying your lawn with a herbicide or control slugs with a pesticide. But think twice. Over-the-counter lawn and garden chemicals are toxic to people and pets. Grizzly bears, known as brown bears outside North America, were once the most widespread bear species in the world, found in Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America from the Arctic to central Mexico. Today, they are confined to sparsely inhabited regions of central Europe, Russia and North America. B.C. is home to 16,000 grizzly bears, or one-quarter of the North American grizzly population. Prior to Europeans settling here, about 25,000 grizzlies roamed the province.
