Different birds have different beaks! That’s because different birds eat different things, in different ways.

A hummingbird’s long, thin bill is perfect for drinking nectar, while a pelican’s long beak with stretchy pouch is helpful for scooping up lots of fish and water.

Check out photos of these and six other very different birds, in care at the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre on Vancouver Island, and discover what makes each one’s beak special!

Looking for something fun to do this summer? Join us at summer camp!

Your week at summer camp will be filled with “everything animals,” from games and art projects to visits with cats, dogs and small animals. Every camp includes a tour of the shelter, where you’ll be introduced to the animals and hear their stories. Depending on your location, you may even get to meet farm animals, tour an animal hospital or visit a wildlife rehabilitation centre!

Registration is now open for summer camp at 11 BC SPCA branches, with more going live in the coming weeks.

Lexi was first rescued and brought to the Haida Gwaii SPCA, but was so fearful in the shelter that she soon went into a foster home to help with the adjustment. Unfortunately, Lexi’s foster caregiver became sick, and she was transferred into another foster home. Happily for her, this foster family soon became her forever family. Here’s some of what they had to say:

“We quickly fell in love with lovely Lexi, introducing her slowly and carefully to the outside world. We often see her looking around as if seeing so many things for the first time.

Even though she is over a year old, because she is experiencing so many things for the first time, it’s like having a puppy mentality in an adult dog body.

“We love her very deeply and would do anything needed for Lexi.”

Do you have an adoption “tail” you’d like to share? Email us a story and photo and your pet could be featured in a future issue of e-Kids!

ekids_High-Paws_Augusten.pngThis month’s e-Kids High Paws goes to Augusten!

When Augusten turned six, he decided to celebrate with the animals in mind. He asked for donations to the West Vancouver SPCA and collected $150. Donations like this are used to help care for the cats, dogs and small animals at the shelter while they look for their forever homes.

On behalf of the animals, thank you, Augusten!

ekids_Furry-Friend_Kofie.pngApril’s Furry Friend of the Month is Kofie! This two-year-old boy is sweet, friendly and loves being pet. He likes playing with wand toys and kids, and doesn’t mind other cats, either! He needs a loving home where he’ll get plenty of attention and the chance to be his lovable self with a forever family!

Kofie arrived at the Abbotsford SPCA but has since moved to their offsite adoption centre at the Bosley’s on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford. He may have found his forever home since this article was written, but inquiries can be made with Bosley’s at 604-850-3385.
