May is Be Kind to Animals Month, and the “Be Kind” issue of Bark! magazine will be delivered to BC SPCA Kids Club members starting next week!

If you’re a member, you will receive a bonus “Kind Acts Count!” poster, which includes five ways YOU can make a difference for animals. #1 is Stand Tall – report bullying and people teasing or hurting animals. It isn’t always easy, but being brave in this way makes a BIG difference.

What’s one thing you can do RIGHT NOW to make a difference? Ask your parents to put the BC SPCA hotline number in their phones. This way, if your family sees an animal you think is in distress or being mistreated, you can quickly report it. The number is 1-855-622-7722.

Here are some other “Be Kind” features you can expect in Bark!:

•  Learn how to grow delicious green snacks for small animals.

•  Discover projects you can do to help birds in your backyard.

•  From Monday to Sunday, find a different way each day of the week to show kindness to a cat you know.

In what ways are you being kind to animals this month – or any time of the year? Let us know at kids@spca.bc.ca.

ekids_Adoption-story_Sniffles.pngSniffles’ adoption story began last year when she was found as a six-month-old stray on Gambier Island. A kind person picked her up and brought her to the Sunshine Coast SPCA. Sniffles got her name because she had to be treated for an upper respiratory condition (sometimes called the “cat flu”). Once she recovered, she found her forever home with a new human family as well as a cat companion named Pixie. It took some time for Sniffles and Pixie to become friends, but their guardians were patient and it paid off! Here’s what they had to say:

“We followed the BC SPCA protocol for introducing cats and finally, after about two months, Sniffles and Pixie liked each other. So, to others introducing a new cat to a resident cat... don’t rush it.

“Sniffles is the most curious cat ever. She gets into everything. She is very affectionate and vocal.

“Her favourite game is to roll a golf ball around under the bed at three in the morning.”

It sounds like Sniffles is having fun in her new home! We’re so glad she was found and brought to the shelter to be given this chance.

ekids_High-Paws_Cadence-and-Brianna.pngA big e-Kids High Paws to Cadence and Brianna!

These two amazing seven-year-olds worked together to make a difference for animals. They held a bottle drive and collected enough bottles and cans to trade in for $57.70, which they donated to the Kamloops SPCA.

Thank you, Brianna and Cadence. Not only did this kind act help animals at the shelter, it also helped our environment by recycling!

Furry-friend-banner_May.png

ekids_Furry-Friend_Pook-and-Dallas.pngMay’s Furry Friends of the Month are Dallas and Pook, a bonded pair of eight-month-old rats. These young fellas are full of life. They love to wrestle with each other and interact with people. Rats are social, active and intelligent animals, so they need space, interaction and fun things to do! Check out our Rat Care Guide to learn more. If your family is interested in Dallas and Pook, they are at the Surrey SPCA awaiting adoption.

Please note: Dallas and Pook were available for adoption at the time this article was written and may have found their forever home since then. Please visit spca.bc.ca/adopt to see all animals looking for homes.
