October 2010

Get the latest issue of Bark!

The latest Bark! magazine should be in your school library today!

In this issue rabbits take centre stage. Included is a four-page pullout guide all about caring for rabbits and why abandoning your rabbit in a public place is cruel.

And just in time to plan your next turkey dinner, you’ll find out how traditionally raised turkeys live versus how turkeys on an SPCA Certified farm live.

Our regular “High Paws” feature highlights some of the amazing things kids are doing to help animals around the province.

Students will enjoy this colourful, informative magazine that they can reference for projects or read at their leisure.

Look for this issue in your library or order a class set of this issue by email. Include your name, number of students, grade, school name and address and we’ll package them up and send them off to your class.

Book Review: Desser the Best Ever Cat

Desser, the Best Ever Cat
by Maggie Smith

Desser, the Best Ever CatDesser the Best Ever Cat is a story about the relationship that a young girl has with her cat as she grows.

It is written from a child’s perspective and illustrates the care and respect that evolves in a good human-animal relationship.

The story deals with the death of Desser in a very gentle, realistic way that portrays the grief one feels as well as the acceptance and ability to move on to give another animal a loving home.

This is best suited for kids aged 4-8.

BC SPCA has many other book recommendations as well.

School Clubs - Get your picture in Bark!

Do you know students who love animals? Do you want to get students involved in their community?

Why not start a School Animal Club this year? The BC SPCA has a School Club manual that is full of ideas on how to recruit members, hold events and share valuable information with others so that they can improve the lives of animals in your community.

Don’t forget to register the club so they can receive the school club welcome package.

Already registered your school club for the 2009/10 school year? Renew your club so you can receive the NEW school club certificate for 2010/11. Email us and we’ll send it out to your club.

New for this year! One lucky school club will win a spot in the Fall 2011 Bark! magazine and a BC SPCA t-shirt for each of the club members. All you have to do is submit a record for each project that is completed. The school club with the most projects or most creative project will be chosen in June 2011. We may even highlight some throughout the year.

Current Events: Pet Store/Puppy Mill

Would you give a puppy to someone you didn’t know or even meet?

That’s how puppy mill breeders work. Reputable breeders don’t sell puppies to pet stores or animal brokers, but puppy mills do.

The BC SPCA cruelty investigators are hard at work trying to put an end to these operations.

You can help by informing your students about this issue, learn how to find a reputable breeder or make the BC SPCA, a rescue group, or local shelter your first option when you start looking to adopt a pet.

Learn more about this story and other BC SPCA news that you may want to include in class discussions.
