Chilliwack residents Peter and Camille Devries have been charged with five separate counts of animal cruelty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Criminal Code. BC SPCA constables seized more than 75 neglected animals from their property, including 47 fowl and five horses.

In addition to living in dirty and substandard conditions, many of the animals were thin or emaciated and suffering from infections.

Winter shouldn't wreak havoc on your pet

Antifreeze, ice and road salt are just a few of the hazards that could put your pet at risk during the cold winter months.

But with a little care and caution, your furry companion can enjoy the season as much as you do and stay safe, too.

The BC SPCA offers tips online for how to keep you and your critters safe this season.

A fine announcement for humane transport

The federal government has announced that the maximum fines will be doubled for infractions under Canada’s humane transport regulations. Several national farming groups have publicly welcomed the new penalties, sending a strong message to transporters that inhumane practices will not be tolerated.

Increasing fines is just one of many steps needed to improve animal welfare during transport. You can help by sending an action email to the minister of agriculture.

Donor of the Month: Mya

Seven-year-old Mya of Kelowna captures the true spirit of giving.

A huge animal lover and a member of the BC SPCA Kids Club, Mya and her family have two pets: a black Lab named Sally and a newly adopted cat named Saige. Mya was so touched by the SPCA’s work that she recently wrote us a compelling thank-you letter and taped a loonie to the note.

In honour of Mya’s gift, we are encouraging branch managers to name at least one homeless animal after her during the month of November.

 Paw Patter

The practice of force-feeding isn’t good for the goose or the gander, but that’s what happens to 20 million ducks and geese every year in order to produce foie gras, a pricey delicacy made from the fatty liver of ducks or geese that have been force-fed several times a day with a metal tube inserted down their throats. You can help end this cruel practice by getting the facts and taking action.
