February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

It's hip to be snipped!Did you know that in just seven years one unspayed cat and her offspring can produce more than 450,000 cats?

For dogs that number is 4,000 and one unspayed rabbit and her offspring can produce 95 billion rabbits in that same period!

The BC SPCA has declared February Spay/Neuter Awareness Month.

Find out how you can improve your pet’s welfare and help end the tragedy of pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering.

 Astro

Astro arrived at the Campbell River Branch on July 2, 2009.

He was left outside the shelter when it was closed and no information about who he was or where he came from was left with him.

Astro really is a sweet dog! He loves attention and people, is extremely playful and he is very eager to please.

Meet Astro!

Trooper

Trooper arrived at the Maple Ridge branch of the BC SPCA on February 28, 2010.

He weighed only a fraction of what he should and the extreme neglect he suffered shocked staff, volunteers and animal lovers across the province.

Almost one year later, Trooper celebrated his second birthday with his loving adoptive family in Pitt Meadows.

Happy Ending.

BC SPCA investigates tragic slaughter of Whistler sled dogs

The BC SPCA is investigating the horrific killing of 100 sled dogs in Whistler.

While the incident occurred in April 2010, the BC SPCA first learned of the killings on Jan. 28, 2011 through a leaked document from WorkSafeBC.

Updates on the SPCA investigation are available on our website.

Few stray cats are spayed or neutered

BC SPCA branch managers estimate less than five percent of stray and surrendered cats coming into shelters are spayed and neutered.

And of the approximately 20,000 cats the BC SPCA receives annually, nearly half are kittens, which indicates that people still aren’t getting their pets sterilized. Pet overpopulation has tragic consequences and is a problem you can fix!

Visit our website to learn how you can make a difference to help end pet overpopulation.

Paw Patter

Many farm animals are neutered too!

Most male farm animals are castrated for meat quality reasons, but unlike procedures for companion animals, castration generally occurs without anaesthetic or pain relief.

The BC SPCA is committed to improving the humane treatment of Canada’s 700 million farm animals and is a leader in efforts to update industry codes of practice that include pain relief during these procedures.
