February 2011

Get Inspired. Inspire students.

Have you been considering inviting a BC SPCA representative to your classroom but didn’t quite know what to expect? Chief Maquinna school in Vancouver invited Naomi and her dog Millie in to teach one of our programs to every class in the school. The principal, teachers and students all felt that the experience was valuable and inspiring.

Kendall Harris from Shaw TV shot a segment of the presentations and interviewed the teachers, students and presenter. The segment was then featured on Shaw TV.

School presenters are available in many of our locations throughout the province.

Book Review: It's Raining Cats and Cats

It's Raining Cats and Cats
by Jeanne Prevost

Age level 7-10

In keeping with our Spay/Neuter theme for the month of February, It’s Raining Cats and Cats is a wonderfully illustrated book that deals with the serious topic of the importance of spaying and neutering a pet – but it does so in a humourous, delightful way. When Jim asks his mother why they had to prevent their cat from having kittens, she takes him into an imaginary future that depicts the potential number of kittens that would result from not having his cat spayed and all of the headaches that go with it.

This book is the Winner of the ASPCA Henry Bergh Award for Best Children's Picture Book, Fiction, Companion Animals and is an Honor Book designated by the Humane Society of the US Youth KIND Award.

School Club: February Tip

February is Spay/Neuter month here at the BC SPCA and your club can help us spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. Many people don’t realize that a kitten or puppy as young as six months of age can get pregnant. A puppy or kitten this age should never be allowed to have a litter so it is important to spay or neuter before they are six months old.

In your school club welcome package you received a 1 + 1 = 6 poster. Display this poster in a prominent location in your school and make an announcement over the intercom or in your school newsletter about the topic.

Don’t forget to send in pictures of your projects so we can put them up on our website as well as enter your club into the draw for some cool club prizes.

Current Event: Sled dog slaughter in Whistler

The BC SPCA is currently investigating the slaughter of 100 dogs owned by sled-dog tour operator Outdoor Adventures in Whistler.

The BC SPCA learned of the killing of the dogs through a WorkSafeBC document which outlined compensation for an employee of the company who developed post-traumatic stress disorder after killing the dogs.

This case is quite disturbing but sheds light on the plight of many sled-dogs kept in B.C. and throughout Canada.

The BC SPCA has a position statement on sled dogs.
