Rodent and rabbit care 101

Did you know guinea pigs, like humans, can't synthesize vitamin C?

That's why they must get daily vitamin C by eating fresh fruits and vegetables or through supplements in pellets or water. And, yes, rabbits will use a litter box just like a cat.

The BC SPCA small animal care sheets provide care and housing advice to ensure your small pets are happy and healthy.

Bunny bylaws

Rabbits in Victoria and Saanich urgently need your support.

Right now, Victoria and Saanich are considering bylaws to regulate the sale of rabbits in pet stores. Bylaws like these are an important part of the long-term solution to rabbit abandonment and overpopulation.

Let city council know that preventing rabbit suffering is important to you. Help make sure rabbit bylaws are adopted – not only in Greater Victoria, but in communities throughout B.C.

Spring break + kids + small animals = fun!

What exactly does a guinea pig mean when he chatters his teeth? Or when a rabbit grunts? Your kids have a chance to find out at our fascinating “What’s the buzz?” workshops in March!

Kids ages eight to 12 will have a fantastic time learning all about animal communication. They’ll get to meet some small animals, discover how to read their body language and find out what kind of home they need.

Workshops are being held in Victoria, Penticton, West Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and Vancouver. Space is limited, so register your child now

Justice for injured pomeranian puppy

A Kamloops man has been banned from owning animals for five years after failing to provide veterinary care for Toni, his injured five-week-old pomeranian puppy.

William Wallace was charged with animal cruelty in 2010 and was sentenced last week following a BC SPCA investigation into the case. Wallace was also fined $250 and ordered to pay $558 in restitution to the BC SPCA for costs incurred for the dog’s care.

She has made a full recovery and has since been adopted into a new, loving home.

Donor of the Month:  Judy Froese

Judy Froese, the loving guardian of a twelve year old Yorkie named Audrey, has been a PAW Plan monthly donor since 1999 and has donated to the BC SPCA for an inspiring 25 years.

She is passionate about preventing cruelty to animals and appreciates all the work the BC SPCA does to combat animal abuse - from conducting cruelty investigations to advocating for stronger laws to protect animals.

Judy says that being a monthly donor is her small way of making a difference, but it feels like a pretty significant one to us - Judy has donated more than $6,000 to help abused, injured and homeless animals get the care they need.

Did you know that rats can laugh?

Rats communicate with each other using ultrasonic sounds beyond the range of human ears. One noise in particular is produced when rats are happy – during playtime, as they wait to be fed or when someone is tickling them. Scientists have likened the sound to laughter in humans!

For more interesting rat facts, stayed tuned for the next issue of Bark! magazine, coming in mid-April to a BC SPCA shelter near you.
