Help wildlife during Wildlife Month at the BC SPCA!
The BC SPCA is dedicating the month of April to wildlife and what better way to celebrate than committing to one specific thing you will do to help protect wildlife.
One example is to boycott helium balloons – both mylar foil and latex.
Every year thousands of helium balloons are released at weddings, parties and corporate events. Yet, balloons eventually drift over waterways and deflate, landing in lakes, streams and oceans.
Ducks, seabirds, dolphins, whales and turtles mistake them for food or become tangled in the strings.
Sam and Emma were surrendered to the BC SPCA Comox Valley & District Branch on March 15, 2011 due to allergies in the home.
Sam and Emma are both adult black Labrador Retrievers and have been together since birth. These two are best friends and love each other very much. Staff and volunteers are hoping they find a new forever home together.
Nick, a young Bouvier Des Flandres, was surrendered to the Victoria Branch of the BC SPCA on April 24, 2010.
Nick's former owner struggled with allergies and decided to give up the puppy rather than keep him isolated from the family, locked away in a basement.
As the only wildlife rehabilitation facility on southern Vancouver Island, Wild ARC performs a vital service for the region.
Each year, the centre treats nearly 2,000 injured and orphaned wild animals, and helps thousands more by providing public education on humane solutions to human-wildlife conflicts.
The BC SPCA is celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Week April 10-16 with provincewide activities to honour the 4,000 dedicated individuals who donate their time and skills to help animals in need.
From dog walking and cat care to fostering and helping with fundraising and community events, our volunteers are guardian angels who change the lives of thousands of abused, homeless, neglected and injured animals every year.
The BC SPCA Lottery for the Animals is bigger and better than ever!
There is $100,000 in cash prizes to be won during the month of May, including daily prizes of $2,500, draws each Friday for $5,000 and a special Mother’s Day draw for $10,000! Purchase a ticket today and change the life of a homeless or abused animal.

Spring is around the corner which means baby bird season will soon be upon us.
Do you know what to do if you find a nestling on the ground? Many people mistakenly believe if they pick up a nestling (a baby bird with almost no feathers) and put in back in the nest, the mother will reject it. Not so! But what if the bird is fully feathered and hopping on the ground?
Our baby bird fact sheet tells you just what to do and what not to do!
Pet stores count on people having “bunnies on the brain” at Easter.
Many stock up on baby rabbits before the holiday, hoping to entice customers into an impulse purchase. Sadly, once Easter is over, many rabbits are abandoned at shelters or – even worse – released outside to die.
Unless you are willing to commit to the daily care of a rabbit for up to 12 years, the BC SPCA is encouraging people to indulge in the chocolate version instead this Easter.
This Spring, make your holiday even better by using SPCA Certified meats, cheese and eggs in all your meals and festivities. Have fun and experiment decorating SPCA Certified eggs. Look through our recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas.
At the BC SPCA, we put farm animal welfare at the top of our holiday list by certifying farms that meet our high standards of animal welfare.
Help the BC SPCA raise money for abused, neglected and homeless animals by participating in the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5k Charity Challenge on June 26!
Simply register online, click on "charity," select the BC SPCA and start collecting pledges today. Funds raised in support of the BC SPCA will help the society to continue caring for the most vulnerable animals in B.C.
Bosley’s Pet Food Plus, a generous supporter of the BC SPCA, will be giving animals a special helping hand next month.
Throughout April, Bosley’s stores will be collecting cash donations and supplies for local SPCA branches. During the weekend of April 9/10 Bosley’s will also be promoting the sale of “paws”, with all proceeds going to the BC SPCA.
In 2009, Linda Verhoeven became the happy guardian of Boots, a sassy adult tabby cat.
Boots didn’t have an easy life before coming to the BC SPCA, and now enjoys her safe, warm home and loving family. As a volunteer at the Nanaimo branch for more than seven years, Linda has seen the difference that care and compassion can make. Volunteering in the cat room, she has helped hundreds of cats, like Boots, receive that second chance for happiness.
Because Linda believes so passionately that all creatures deserve kindness and respect, she has also been a PAW Plan monthly donor for ten years.
Across North America, millions upon millions of birds are killed by collisions with windows every year – a death rate equivalent to several hundred Exxon Valdez oil spills.
They may be attempting to reach habitat seen through the glass or mirrored in the glass surface. To help prevent bird strikes in your home, try using WindowAlert™ decals. These decals have a special coating that reflects ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is invisible to humans, but birds see it as a brilliant glow – much like a stoplight.
