Call the horse lucky by Juanita Havill and Nancy Lane
Call the Horse Lucky, written by Juanita Havill and illustrated by Nancy Lane, is the heartwarming story of a girl named Mel who notices a sick and neglected horse. She takes action by telling her grandmother, who in turn contacts the local humane society. When the horse is taken to a rescue ranch, Mel decides to name him Lucky. And later, when Lucky goes to live at a horse therapy ranch, Mel learns that while she realistically cannot keep him as her pet, she can still help him by becoming a volunteer.
Filled with positive messages about animal care and soft watercolour illustrations that perfectly portray the feelings of both humans and horses, and including an afterward with practical information on how to help horses, Call the Horse Lucky is a wonderful book for primary-grade readers.

May is Be Kind to Animals month. Wild, farm and companion animals all deserve to be treated kindly. Ask your club members to brainstorm some ways in which animals are not treated well and the alternatives. Their ideas may range from banning leg-hold traps to eating less meat to using a humane collar for their dog. Creating posters, skits or speeches is a great way to get the word out about the need to be kind to animals of all species.
Don’t forget to send in pictures of your projects so we can put them up on our website as well as enter your club into the draw for some cool club prizes. You could win t-shirts for all of your club members.
Deadline for entry is June 10th. Send entries via email to pneuman@spca.bc.ca or by mail to BC SPCA 1245 East 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5T 1R1, attention Paula Neuman.

Do you have students who love animals and are looking for ways to learn more about them? Then BC SPCA summer camp is the place for them to spend a week this summer.
In addition to learning about pet care, animal health and welfare, the children will come away with a wealth of knowledge about farm animal welfare, wild animals, the environment and careers in the field of animal welfare.
There are 15 camp locations around the province. Online registration has begun in the Lower Mainland and Victoria. Online registration for all other locations will begin on May 11th.
If you would like to let students in your school know about our camp, let us know if there is space in your school newsletter and we can send information. We can send you a copy of our poster as well.
