House of Hazards

There are all sorts of hazards for pets in and around the house this holiday season. Here are a few hazards to think about.
  • House of Hazards gameTinsel – attractive to cats and if ingested can get caught in their intestinal tract.

  • Sidewalk salt – can cause irritation to your pet’s foot pads. Wipe them clean every time they come in from the outdoors. Choose a pet-friendly, non-corrosive de-icing compound readily available through retail outlets.

  • Cooked turkey bones – if eaten the bones can splinter and the fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations.

For a fun way to get kids thinking about household hazards, download our House of Hazards worksheet (2 pages) and answer sheet. You will be surprised at how many hazards are in your house!

Banner Book Review Stanleys party

Book Review: Stanley’s Party
by Linda Bailey, Illustrated by Bill Slavin

“Stanley knew he wasn’t supposed to sit on the couch. But his people went out a lot. And they never came home before midnight.”Stanley's party book cover

So begins Stanley’s Party, written by Linda Bailey. With exuberant illustrations by Bill Slavin, this picture book for primary-aged students follows Stanley, a usually obedient dog who decides to push his luck.

First, Stanley ventures onto the couch. When his action finds no consequence, he quickly discovers new ways to misbehave, until he’s hosting the entire canine community for a raucous party at his place.

Kids will love this fun and funny book which paints dogs as they are: social animals who need companionship… of both their fellow pooches and their people.

Banner School Club December

Here are two ways to help our animals find a forever home for the holidays.

  • Adopt posterCreate an attractive poster for one local animal from our website and put it up in a public area (with permission). Visit your local shelter, if you can, to meet the animal and give your poster a more personal touch.

  • Join us for a full day of fun at workshops held in Victoria, Maple Ridge, Richmond and Penticton. Here you will get a chance to spend a day creating crafts, posters and meeting the animals in our shelter, all in order to make the world a better place for the animals who depend on us for their care. In Victoria there is also an evening craft club and a small animal information session for families.

Check out the dates and locations and register online today.

Happy EndingsNot all news is bad news. In this issue we want to direct you to the Happy Endings section of our website. Here you will read about some of the great matches that have been made between humans and their new found furry companion. These stories are heart-warming and will make you and your students smile.

This month’s feature is Sugar, a pup who was brought into the Chilliwack SPCA after an SPCA officer found her and her siblings living without food, water and much needed medical attention. She has since found a forever home.

Learn more about this and other Happy Endings stories that you may want to share with your class.
