The BC SPCA is excited to announce the launch of an innovative new online pet search site that will help reunite thousands of lost pets with their anxious families.
In addition to featuring photos and descriptions of lost animals in care in all BC SPCA shelters, the public will be able to post their own photos and descriptions of lost and found animals directly on the site.
When Russell came as a stray to the BC SPCA Vernon & District Branch, he was quite nervous and shy. Now, Russell is very friendly and easy going. He gets along well with both people and other cats; he just loves to play and be goofy.
Techno (aka Bondo)
was brought into the BC SPCA Trail Regional Branch when he was picked up as a stray, but no one ever came to claim him. Luckily Techno met someone who would introduce him to a whole new world with exciting new friends.
Last year, the BC SPCA reunited 5,169 lost animals with their guardians. This is more than double the national average, but could still be better. Tragically, the national return-to-guardian rate for cats is less than five per cent.
The key to returning lost pets? Identification. Dogs and cats need at least two forms of ID, including a tattoo or microchip. Your pet's ID will help him find his way home.

communities.

Charges of animal cruelty are pending against the Nanaimo owner of a seven-month-old German shepherd puppy who was found with a collar deeply embedded in her neck.
The malnourished puppy was tied up in a yard and was wearing a 33-centimetre collar that was at least 10 centimetres too short to go around her neck.
Growing up, Jo Faloona's family had two dogs she loved dearly. But it wasn’t until Jo got her own dog that she experienced how strong the human-animal bond could be. Her love for Keely inspired her to get involved with the 2011 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause.
Jo is one of our top provincial fundraisers, raising $6,095 for the Vancouver, West Vancouver and Burnaby branches. Thank you, Jo, for being a hero to animals!
Across Canada, the story is the same: fewer lost cats are returned to their guardians than lost dogs.
Part of the problem may be how long people wait before searching. Guardians of lost cats generally do not contact their local shelters as quickly or as often as guardians of lost dogs.
Many hold off looking right away, believing their cats will find their way back home. Checking with local shelters immediately and frequently could help reunite more missing cats and guardians.
