March 2012
March is Small Animal Month at the BC SPCA, and we know that some teachers share their love of animals by having a classroom pet such as a rabbit, guinea pig, rat, gerbil, hamster or other small animal.
Sharing a pet with students can have tremendous effects on student attitudes towards animals and can give children who have little or no experience with animals the opportunity to interact with an animal and learn from a good role model about the wonderful relationship one can have with an animal.
Role modeling is a very important part of bringing in a pet to the classroom. Often teachers allow different students to care for the classroom pet over the weekend or school holidays but is this sending the right message? What if the pet was a dog or a cat, would you send it home with a different family every weekend? Why do we value some animals differently than others?
This is one of the issues addressed in the BC SPCA position statement on classroom pets. It is intended to provide teachers with information to ensure they are providing the best situation for the pet and imparting the right messages about caring and valuing animals as pets.
Oh, Theodore! Guinea Pig Poems by Susan Katz
Oh, Theodore! is a vibrantly illustrated poetic story about patience, care and bonding with a new pet. The story is told from a young boy’s perspective on getting a guinea pig as a pet. He knows it will take patience and time for Theodore to trust him so he does everything slowly and gently. His reward is a new fuzzy friend that will squeak, nibble and entertain him for years.
This is a great introduction to the care of guinea pigs in a fun, poetic format. Kids will love the poems and illustrations.

In keeping with the theme of small animals we would like to offer you access to all of the small animal care guides we have produced so far. This includes one for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats. Email us and let us know which care guide(s) you would like for your club.
All you gerbil lovers don’t despair! Next month’s Bark! will have the care guide for gerbils.
You can put these up in your classroom, library or school so all students have access to the information.
The BC Government is proposing changes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act
that will hand over the review of appeals from individuals whose
animals have been seized to the BC Farm Industry Review Board. We at the
BC SPCA have deep concerns about this for several reasons and are
asking for your help in putting a stop to Bill 24.
