Dear friend,

Summer is coming and what better time to make a difference for animals? You can change the life of an animal in need by providing a home for one of the thousands of cats and kittens entering our shelters during this busy season, by running or walking to raise urgently needed funds during the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge or by making product choices at your local farmer’s market that support producers who are committed to raising their animals according to SPCA Certified standards.

Enjoy the summer and thank you for your life-saving support for animals in need!

With appreciation,

Lorie Chortyk
General Manager, Community Relations

PS. You can multiply your impact! Forward this message to friends, family and colleagues.

BC SPCA Happy Ending

A BC SPCA staff member who had helped rescue 19 cats from a home that was to be demolished drove by a week later out of curiosity. It was very lucky she did as there was one more fluffy little kitten sitting in the wreckage of the home.

Summer is coming – and so are the kittens!

kittens-in-basket200.jpgMany things can remind us of summer. The cheery chime of an ice cream truck approaching. The sweet scent of freshly mown grass. The clamour of kids playing outside.

At the BC SPCA, our reminder comes in the form of kittens – thousands of them. Come summer, shelters are flooded with abandoned and unwanted litters, plus hundreds of adult cats.

Find out what you can do to help.

It’s not too late to make a difference!

Charity-Challenge2-200.jpgThe Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge Half-Marathon & 5k is only weeks away - but it’s not too late to register and make a difference. On June 24, join our dedicated team as we make a commitment to better ourselves and the lives of local animals.

When you join, we will provide support for you - from fundraising suggestions to cheering you on during the race. If a couple of weeks is not enough time for you to train, we encourage you to walk the 5k or donate to one of our BC SPCA Team members. Register or donate today.

B.C. government becomes a political animal

Government-updates200.jpgThis spring, the B.C. legislature saw a nearly unprecedented amount of animal welfare legislation introduced.

Three pieces of legislation were brought forward  – including Bill 24 to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and two other bills that would regulate animal health and dog and cat breeding throughout the province.

Open House events a success

Open-House200.jpgThank you to everyone who attended the 2012 BC SPCA Open House events, which were presented by Hill’s® Science Diet® and held in 29 communities this month to promote adoption awareness.

From bake sales, scavenger hunts and plant sales to nail trimmings and face painting for kids, each event was unique in its own way. The annual Open House series is a great opportunity for us to open our doors and share how your support is making a difference to animals in need.

Ten minutes is all it takes

hot-dogs-in-cars200.jpgTragically, every summer, people make the fatal mistake of leaving their dog in the car as they step inside to run errands.

The temperature inside a parked car, even in the shade with the windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill your pet.

Can you recognize the signs of heatstroke?

SPCA Certified and Farmers’ Markets:  A perfect match!

farmers-market200.jpgFarmers’ markets are a perfect way to give your direct support to an SPCA Certified farmer. Throughout the summer and fall, farmers’ markets feature SPCA Certified chicken, turkey, beef, pork, lamb, cheeses and cage-free eggs.

It’s the perfect time to meet the farmers, ask questions and purchase ethical products all in one go! The BC SPCA’s events calendar includes all the information you need to find a farmers’ market near you.

Donor of the Month: Dr. Avrum Soudack

donor-june-200.jpgFor many of our supporters we have cause to be doubly grateful as they give both time and money. Dr. Avrum Soudack has been giving since 1999 and volunteering at the Vancouver shelter for more than two years. As well as caring for the shelter cats, he’s taken pictures of hundreds of animals to help catch the attention of potential adopters. His photos were featured in our recent letter about the homeless cat crisis in BC.

Paw Patter

Too many kittens!

Last year, the BC SPCA took in 7,500 kittens around the province – that’s 20 kittens a day! It’s also more than three times the number of puppies brought in to our shelters. Please help by telling everyone you know that this is a problem you can fix.
