Ten minutes to disaster
Every summer dogs suffer and die needlessly in B.C. from heat exhaustion. Most people don’t realize that in as little as ten minutes in a hot car a dog can suffer irreparable brain damage.
How hot is too hot? If you need to crack the window or turn on the air conditioning, it’s too hot to leave your dog for any length of time.
At BC SPCA summer camp, kids spend a week playing games, making crafts, creating skits and listening to great guest speakers – all while discovering the world of companion, farm and wild animals.
The best parts? According to last year’s campers, spending some quality time with the shelter animals, of course, and making friends with other kids who are just as passionate about animals.
Orange and white are great summer colors, and grey is nice for the fall... but a black cat’s coat never goes out of style!
There are so many reasons why black cats make amazing pets. Unfortunately, it’s always more challenging to find forever homes for these chic felines. If you’re thinking of adopting a cat, why not consider a black beauty? After all, he’ll go with everything.
Have your say on painful practices in farm animals!
Many horses, pigs and cattle are exposed to painful procedures in their lives, including castration, tail docking and dehorning. Should these practices be allowed? If so, under what conditions? Three new surveys give you a chance to speak your mind to help inform Canada’s new Codes of Practice that govern the care of farm animals across the country.
Calling all camera buffs! The fourth annual Wildlife-In-Focus urban wildlife photography contest is now open. All B.C. photographers 14 years of age and older are invited to submit photos fitting the themes ‘Backyard Habitats’ and ‘Wild Settings.’ Winners will be featured in a future issue of AnimalSense magazine and receive a great prize pack.
Are films more your style? Amateur or professional filmmakers of any age are encouraged to enter the second annual Paws and Claws Film Festival. Films that portray interesting wildlife behaviour are welcome, whether presented from an educational, documentary, story-telling or humorous perspective. Winners will be announced at a live screening event in November.

Donor of the Month – Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society
Not only are these heroes saving lives each day, but Surrey’s fire fighters are also dedicated to programs that enrich the lives of children and enhance self-esteem.
Since 2003, the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society has supported the BC SPCA’s Summer Camps, which promote respect and compassion for all forms of life. In addition to their charitable support, fire fighters come to the Surrey camps to educate the campers about fire safety, burn treatment and the importance of smoke detectors.
Have you ever watched your cat drink? You might need a high-speed camera to see what’s actually going on! A cat only laps with the tip of her tongue. So how does she quench her thirst? As she dips her tongue in and out, the water forms a column that flows right into her mouth. The key is to be quick – she laps at an incredible rate of about four times a second!
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia.
