The summer has
just flown by and it’s hard to believe that September is already here. As you
gear up for your fall activities, please don’t forget to include a few fun ways
to help animals in your plans. Join us for our Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause event this month, vote
for us in the Jamieson Call for the Wild online fundraising contest, enter our
wildlife photo or film competitions or sign a child you know up for our BC SPCA
Kids Club. Together we can make a life-saving difference to B.C’s most
vulnerable animals.
Thank you for
your ongoing support!
With appreciation,
Lorie Chortyk General Manager, Community Relations

Meet Sugar from the BC SPCA Sunshine Coast Branch. Sugar LOVES cuddles, car rides and water. She also adores the camera and can be a regular ham when she sees
one out.
Squeakers came into the care of the BC SPCA in October 2010. He was rescued when he was just days-old with his mum and brother. He was given his name due to the adorable little squeaks that occurred whenever he tried to meow.
The Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws
for a Cause is almost here!

biggest, most paw-some day of the year. The BC SPCA wants to remind everyone
that online registration closes at midnight
tonight for all Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walks occurring on September 9*.

to help Wild ARC win up to $100,000?
You can assist in providing
critical, compassionate care for B.C. wildlife, just by voting daily for Wild ARC in
the Jamieson Vitamins Call for the Wild contest.
From now until September 16,
each online vote determines how a $100,000 donation will be divided between
five competing wildlife organizations.
Please remember to vote now and
every day for Wild ARC on Jamieson’s Facebook page. Note: A Facebook account is
not required to participate.
B.C. photographers 14 years of age and older have until September 30 to enter our Wildlife-In-Focus photography contest. Photos should fit the theme ‘Backyard Habitats’ or ‘Wild Settings.’
Until September 28, amateur and professional filmmakers of any age are encouraged to enter the second annual Paws and Claws Film Festival.

Kids ages 13 and under can join for just $15 a year.
Kids Club members receive
a special welcome package, quarterly issues of Bark! magazine, monthly email newsletters and posters focusing on
pets, farm animals and wildlife.Through the club, kids stay informed about

Her name may be Tiny, but her
determination to overcome the odds is larger than life.
The critically ill shih
tzu was found wandering in a Victoria neighbourhood on Aug. 2, so badly matted
that her body was covered in open wounds filled with maggots.
She was also
suffering from organ failure and other medical issues so extreme that
veterinarians gave her little chance of survival. But the pint-sized pup is
defying the odds, with the help of around-the-clock care at the Victoria SPCA. (Photo credit: Wendy Nesbitt)
Donor of the month: Vancouver Technical Secondary School Key Club
This
month, a big thank you goes to the Vancouver Technical Secondary School Key
Club for their outstanding community service and generosity towards the BC
SPCA.
Each year, members fundraise through
events like car washes, carnivals, bake sales and barbeques. Their passion for animal welfare was a definite factor
in choosing where to direct funds, as many of the members are animal guardians
themselves.
We have seen some
scorching temperatures here in British Columbia this summer. But have you ever wondered what it would take to survive in a place
that is hot year round? Desert animals are specially adapted to do just that.
One such animal is the water-holding frog from
Australia. Like its name suggests, this frog stores water under its skin and
then seals itself in a sort of cocoon underground to keep the water from drying
out. The cocoon is actually made from the frog’s shed skin! To avoid the
heat, the water-holding frog spends most of the year underground and is usually
only seen after heavy rains.
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. The Society provides a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
