Dear friend,
When most people think of
the SPCA, they think of cats and dogs. But the BC SPCA is also actively
involved in creating a more humane life for the 700 million farm animals raised
in Canada each year. October is farm animal awareness month and in this issue
of Anim@ls we highlight some of the work being carried out on behalf of farm
animals and the steps you can take to make a difference.
Thank you for
your ongoing support!
With appreciation,
Lorie Chortyk General Manager, Community Relations
PS. You can multiply your impact! Forward this message to friends, family and colleagues.

Guilty plea in Whistler sled dog case
Bob Fawcett, former general manager of the Whistler-based Howling Dog Tours, entered a guilty plea on Aug. 30 to causing unnecessary pain and suffering to numerous sled dogs in April 2010.
The gruesome details of the killings captured international attention after they came to light in 2011, and in April 2012, Fawcett was charged with animal cruelty following an extensive BC SPCA investigation. A sentencing date is scheduled for November 22, 2012.

Donor of the month: Natalia Evans
“The BC SPCA’s emergency medical care saved Lucy’s life before I adopted her – fundraising for the BC SPCA was a way to show my appreciation,” says Natalia Evans, who came first in the Calendar Contest earning Lucy Lemon her prime spot on the cover. “All three dogs come to work with us at The Hitch Company, so all the sales reps were talked into donating in Lucy’s name,” laughs Natalia.

Green Eggs and Ham!
The colour of a chicken’s egg is no indication of whether it is healthier or laid by a chicken raised more humanely.
Generally, chicken breeds with red earlobes lay brown eggs and chicken breeds with white earlobes lay white eggs. There are exceptions to this “rule,” including the Araucana chicken breed, which has a red earlobe but lays eggs in colours ranging from pink to blue to green. There really are green eggs to go with ham!
