Winter is approaching, which means
it’s time to take extra care to ensure that your pets are protected from winter
hazards such as toxic anti-freeze, poisonous holiday plants and de-icing
substances that can harm your pet. As the holidays approach, it’s also time to
start thinking about gifts for the animal lovers on your list. Check out our
Pawsitive Gifts information below for details on how you can make a life-saving
difference for animals this season.
Thank you for
your ongoing support!
With appreciation,
Lorie Chortyk General Manager, Community Relations

Leo and his siblings were surrendered to the BC SPCA
Sunshine Coast Branch when his guardian could not find homes for them all.
Now Leo lives a life that a rabbit could only dream of, vacationing
in Shuswap, munching on fresh veggies from the garden and hanging out with his new fur-ever family.
They may have their own fur coats, but your pets need
your help to keep them safe from cold weather and holiday hazards.
“Cold-weather
conditions can pose a serious risk to your pet,” says Lorie
Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC
SPCA. “Extra caution should be taken to ensure that your pet stays safe and
healthy this winter.” Check out these winter pet safety tips for your
four-legged friend.

The 56 sled dogs at the heart of a tragic animal
cruelty case will be laid
to rest on Nov. 2 at the BC SPCA’s pet cemetery near Penticton.
The
discovery of the mass killing at a Whistler-based sled dog tour company in 2011
sparked international outrage and launched the largest animal cruelty
investigation in BC SPCA history. The former general manager of the tour
company pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges in August and will be
sentenced later this month.
Picture this. A cat seeks warmth under the car you
have just parked in your carport. A small leak from a radiator hose drips
antifreeze into a small pool on the concrete. The cat laps up the tablespoon of
liquid, attracted by its sweet taste. Untreated, this cat will die of
antifreeze poisoning within 24 hours.
Make the switch to non-toxic
propylene-based antifreeze, which is safe for both pets and your vehicle.
Each
year in Canada, more than 700 thousand mink and fox are farmed for their fur.
The Codes of Practice that govern their care and living conditions are now open
for public comment.
Don’t
miss your opportunity to speak on behalf of these animals and influence their
quality of life.

Petsecure
has been a wonderful partner and supporter of the BC SPCA for the past three
years. They provide our adopters with
six weeks of free pet insurance and help us promote pet insurance as an
important part of responsible animal guardianship.
During this three-year term
with us, Petsecure has paid out more than $63,700 in claims. We look forward to
our continuing partnership in the years to come. Thank you Petsecure!
Pets in the City
Get involved to make positive
changes for companion animals! Burnaby and Maple Ridge are two of the B.C.
communities considering municipal animal bylaw changes.
If you are a resident
of Burnaby, please join us in expressing our support to ban the sale of dogs,
cats, and rabbits in pet stores. Use our Pets
in the City page to send an email to Burnaby or check
out what other changes are happening across the province.
When Chris Stollery and Alana Amaroso-Stollery
were married last summer, they were eager to include their rescue dogs and help
other animals find homes.
At the wedding, Chris and Alana asked their
guests to make a donation to the BC SPCA if they wanted the newlyweds to kiss
(raising $300!) and for their wedding favours, the couple thanked guests for
support by making another $300 gift to help animals in need. Thank you and
congratulations!
Countless animals
have served Canada in times of war – even insects.
During the First World War, glow worms helped soldiers by allowing them to read messages and
maps in the dark. Rather than lanterns, which would have tipped off the enemy, the worms’ soft blue-green light went undetected.
