December 2012 Issue 118
Goose is a gorgeous grey and white female who came to the BC SPCA Vernon & District Branch in August 2012 after her previous owners could no longer
care for her.
Goose would be a fantastic choice for someone with a calm, quiet lifestyle who is looking for a companion.
The holidays are a time for festive decorations
and special treats, but some of these seasonal items can be hazardous for your
pets. The BC SPCA offers some tips to keep your pet safe and happy this holiday
season.
We’ve launched A Second Chance, our holiday social
fundraising campaign, for the animals who need extra care when they come to us.
Many animals arrive in the worst possible shape: malnourished, injured and
cowering in fear. They need a lot of care, and we’re asking you to give them A Second Chance.
How? By not only
giving, but also spreading the word about this campaign to your social network. Please
share today.
Sled dog case leads to reform
The BC SPCA was shocked by the light
sentence handed down on Nov. 22 to Bob Fawcett, the man responsible for the
mass killing of Whistler-based sled dogs in 2010.
But the SPCA believes
its investigation into the disturbing case has led to a more humane future for
sled dogs across the province. The investigation prompted changes to B.C.’s
animal cruelty laws and a new code of practice for the sled dog industry in
B.C.
One of the great things about holiday celebrations is the food. This year, consider the food served during the holidays and put farm animal welfare at the top of your “wish” list by buying SPCA Certified products.
The BC SPCA is a national leader in programs, like SPCA Certified, that promote better lives for farm animals. Add your voice and make a difference for the more than 100 million farm animals in B.C.
The results are in! More than five hundred photos were
submitted to the 2012 Wildlife-in-Focus Photography Contest. With
so many fantastic entries to choose from, the judges had difficulty picking
only a few to highlight. See
the winning photos today!
In addition to showcasing our province’s unique
and beautiful wildlife, contest participants helped raise $3,075 for wild
animals in need.

National
Cupcake Day
Join us for the first-ever National Cupcake Day for
SPCAs & Humane Societies on Feb. 25, 2013 and transform mouth watering
treats into life-saving help for our most vulnerable animals.
Host your own
National Cupcake Day at work, home or school; bake scrumptious cupcakes
for donations and raise funds to save animals’ lives.
This month we are honouring Trish and Cyriel DeBruyne for their decision to leave a very generous gift to the BC SPCA in their Will.
In addition to Trish’s dedication to helping homeless, abused, and neglected animals as Manager at the SPCA’s Comox branch, Cyriel approached us just a few weeks ago to let us know about their admirable intention.
Turkey may smell delicious,
but dogs can be tempted by inedible holiday traditions, too. Just ask Agnes! Last year, emergency surgery on the six-year-old Old English sheepdog recovered approximately 20 feet of sharp wire tinsel from her stomach. Be sure to take time to identify and move any potential dangers well out of reach of your dog’s mouth this holiday season.
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. The Society provides a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
