What’s one of the absolute best things we can do to care for
our pets? Have them spayed or neutered!
|
February is
Spay/Neuter Awareness Month at the BC SPCA. Spaying (for females) and
neutering (for males) are surgical operations performed by a veterinarian to prevent animals from reproducing
(having babies). Pets are given a drug to make them sleep during the surgery,
called anesthetic, so they don’t feel
anything during the procedure and recover quickly afterwards.
|
|
Spay and neuter not only help to combat the problem of pet
overpopulation (more animals than there are good homes available) but have extra
benefits for the animals who undergo the procedures. Cats are less likely to run away or fight, dogs
tend to be calmer and less likely to
bite or escape the backyard and all spayed or neutered pets have a lower chance of developing certain cancers.
|
|
Have a cat, dog or rabbit at home who isn’t spayed or
neutered? Ask your parents to make an appointment with a veterinarian today. If
you have small animals like guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats or mice,
remember to keep males and females separated!

February’s Furry Friend of the Month is Winston,
a handsome three-year-old cream ginger tabby cat.
Before arriving at the Shuswap SPCA, Winston hung around the
neighbourhood as a stray cat. But Winston’s affectionate personality shows he
really does need a comfy home and a guardian to cuddle. He loves to have his
long fur brushed regularly (a must for a cat with a coat like Winston’s!) and to
be scratched under his chin. Everyone who meets Winston falls in love!
Please note: Winston was available for adoption at the time this article
was written, and may have found his forever home since then. Visit the BC
SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently looking for homes.
