National Cupcake Day!

Do you like cupcakes?

 National Cupcake Day

February 25 is Canada’s first-ever National Cupcake Day for SPCAs & Humane Societies, a very special event where you can bake, decorate and eat cupcakes – all to help raise funds and awareness for animals in need.

 Cat Cupcake

It’s FREE to register as a Youth Cupcake Host. You’ll get your own Online Bakery and receive a Cupcake Host Welcome Package in the mail. Your package has everything you need to hold your very own National Cupcake Day Party, including posters and balloons! Some resources are also available online. Plus, want to hold a Cupcake Day at your school? We’ve got tips to make it a success.

 Dog Cupcake

National Cupcake Day is open to everyone – kids, teens and adults – so you can spread the word to friends, parents, siblings and teachers. Together we can end animal cruelty, one cupcake at a time!

Pet Care Tip

What’s one of the absolute best things we can do to care for our pets? Have them spayed or neutered!

 Spay your cat

February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month at the BC SPCA. Spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) are surgical operations performed by a veterinarian to prevent animals from reproducing (having babies). Pets are given a drug to make them sleep during the surgery, called anesthetic, so they don’t feel anything during the procedure and recover quickly afterwards.

 Spay your dog

Spay and neuter not only help to combat the problem of pet overpopulation (more animals than there are good homes available) but have extra benefits for the animals who undergo the procedures. Cats are less likely to run away or fight, dogs tend to be calmer and less likely to bite or escape the backyard and all spayed or neutered pets have a lower chance of developing certain cancers.

 Spay your rabbit

Have a cat, dog or rabbit at home who isn’t spayed or neutered? Ask your parents to make an appointment with a veterinarian today. If you have small animals like guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats or mice, remember to keep males and females separated!

Furry Friend of the Month

February’s Furry Friend of the Month is Winston, a handsome three-year-old cream ginger tabby cat.

WinstonBefore arriving at the Shuswap SPCA, Winston hung around the neighbourhood as a stray cat. But Winston’s affectionate personality shows he really does need a comfy home and a guardian to cuddle. He loves to have his long fur brushed regularly (a must for a cat with a coat like Winston’s!) and to be scratched under his chin. Everyone who meets Winston falls in love!

Please note: Winston was available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found his forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently looking for homes.
