When many people think of the BC SPCA, they think
of the rescue and care we provide for cats and dogs. But each year hundreds of
rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and other small animals are also surrendered
at shelters across the province.
In this issue of Anim@ls we highlight some of
the wonderful pint-sized pets who need loving homes.
Thank you for supporting all the animals in our care – both great and small!
Much appreciation, Lorie Chortyk General Manager, Community Relations

Henderson is a charming young man currently waiting at the BC SPCA Richmond Education & Adoption Centre.
If
you’re looking for someone as handsome as Ryan Kesler and as friendly
as the Sedins, search no further than this charming feline Canucks fan!
There’s a good reason people came up with the term “breeding like
rabbits.”They do.
Assuming zero mortality, one
unspayed rabbit and heroffspring can
produce 95 billion rabbits in just seven years, according to
veterinarian and rabbit expert Dana Krempels.
Sadly, too many people illegally
abandon pet rabbits in parks and other outdoor spaces, where the animals suffer
horrific welfare and give birth to generations of new bunnies who will suffer
the same fate. But you can make a difference.
Merry’s story
Found pregnant and
abandoned in a backyard, Merry was brought to the Maple Ridge shelter by a Good
Samaritan shortly before Christmas.
That same night, she gave birth. Merry
raised her three healthy babies in the care of an SPCA volunteer foster family,
and is now back at the shelter, ready for her forever home.

Ten years ago, Tracey Farina welcomed a cat into her home
whose previous guardian had been surprised when “he” had kittens.
The mama cat
was one of three rescue cats in the family.
Realizing there was a limit to the
number of homeless animals she could provide care for, Tracey considered other
ways she could help animals and became a PAWPlan monthly donor.
Thank you
Tracey and congratulations on your tenth PAW-versary!
