April is Wildlife Month – and what better
way to celebrate than by learning how you can help create a safer, more humane
environment for the wild animals in your community?
April is also the month we
celebrate our incredible volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week, April
21-27. Thank you to the nearly 4,000 individuals who give so generously of
their time and energy to give B.C.’s most vulnerable animals a brighter future.
Much appreciation, Lorie Chortyk General Manager, Community Relations
PS. You can multiply your impact! Forward this message to friends, family and colleagues.
The BC SPCA
has launched a new animal abuse hotline to respond to complaints of animal
cruelty and neglect across the province.
Calls to the new toll-free hotline
(1-855-622-7722) are fielded by staff at a Victoria-based BC SPCA Call
Centre and details are dispatched to regionally-based SPCA constables for
investigation.
Watch out for the birds – it’s nesting
season
From mid-April to
June, nesting birds are particularly vulnerable to attacks by predators,
including our cats and dogs.
While off-leash near waterways, where shorebirds
are incubating their eggs, dogs can unintentionally flush birds off their nests
or crush their eggs. Remember to leash your dog when walking near shorebird
habitats and keep cats well supervised or indoors.

At camp, they’ll spend a week immersed in all things animals: making
crafts; playing games; creating skits and listening to special guest speakers.
Plus, they’ll make some new two-legged and four-legged friends.

spay/neuter grants help B.C. communities combat cat overpopulation
The BC SPCA’s new
Community Cat Spay/Neuter Grant Program will help fifteen municipalities and
non-profit organizations deliver spay and neuter services across British
Columbia.
Grants will support 'trap-neuter-return' programs for feral cats as
well as low-cost spay/neuter of owned cats in these communities.
The program,
funded in part by a BC SPCA donor, will provide up to 1,000 operations and
prevent 5,000 kitten births this year in B.C.
Recognize these bird calls?
With spring underway, brush up on your bird identification skills by visiting
the Cornell Lab of Ornithology
website. That way, on your next outing, you can easily recognize the familiar
sounds of a barred owl or chickadee.
