Dear friend,

April is Wildlife Month – and what better way to celebrate than by learning how you can help create a safer, more humane environment for the wild animals in your community?

April is also the month we celebrate our incredible volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 21-27. Thank you to the nearly 4,000 individuals who give so generously of their time and energy to give B.C.’s most vulnerable animals a brighter future.

Much appreciation,
Lorie Chortyk
General Manager, Community Relations

PS. You can multiply your impact! Forward this message to friends, family and colleagues.

 Happy Endings

BC SPCA Happy Ending

"I am loved. There is a place for me here forever,” says Patrick, a feline BC SPCA alumnus (written by his new guardian).

Once a wandering stray whose former guardian chose not to claim him, Patrick is now off the streets and into a home where he is cherished every day.

Animal abuse hotline launched

Horse-cruelty-200.jpg

The BC SPCA has launched a new animal abuse hotline to respond to complaints of animal cruelty and neglect across the province.

Calls to the new toll-free hotline (1-855-622-7722) are fielded by staff at a Victoria-based BC SPCA Call Centre and details are dispatched to regionally-based SPCA constables for investigation.

Watch out for the birds – it’s nesting season

AMRO_nestlings.jpg

From mid-April to June, nesting birds are particularly vulnerable to attacks by predators, including our cats and dogs.

While off-leash near waterways, where shorebirds are incubating their eggs, dogs can unintentionally flush birds off their nests or crush their eggs. Remember to leash your dog when walking near shorebird habitats and keep cats well supervised or indoors.

Read our tips for what to do if you find a baby bird.

summer camp Boy petting rabbit-200.jpg

Deepen a child’s connection to animals by signing them up for our much-anticipated “Among Animals” summer camps.

At camp, they’ll spend a week immersed in all things animals: making crafts; playing games; creating skits and listening to special guest speakers. Plus, they’ll make some new two-legged and four-legged friends.

Registration is now open for the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Check out spca.bc.ca/camp to find dates, times and locations.

Volunteers honoured

Volunteer Shawna Willan-200.jpg

The BC SPCA is celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 21-27, with provincewide activities to honour the 4,000 dedicated individuals who donate their time and skills to help animals in need.

From dog walking and cat care to fostering and helping with fundraising and community events, our volunteers are guardian angels who change the lives of thousands of abused, homeless, neglected and injured animals every year.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers!

BC SPCA spay/neuter grants help B.C. communities combat cat overpopulation

cat overpopulation

The BC SPCA’s new Community Cat Spay/Neuter Grant Program will help fifteen municipalities and non-profit organizations deliver spay and neuter services across British Columbia.

Grants will support 'trap-neuter-return' programs for feral cats as well as low-cost spay/neuter of owned cats in these communities.

The program, funded in part by a BC SPCA donor, will provide up to 1,000 operations and prevent 5,000 kitten births this year in B.C.

Donor of the month: Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort & Spa

deltalogo-200.jpg

This April, we are honouring the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort & Spa as our Donor of the Month for their generous support.

For the past four years, their annual “Best in Show – the Dog Show for Mutts” event has raised nearly $14,000 for the BC SPCA Victoria Branch.

This year’s event is on June 1 – so come out and enjoy this fun, family event. Thank you Delta Ocean Pointe!

Paw Patter

You are out for a walk in the woods. From overhead comes a low call. Who-cooks-for-you? Who-cooks-for-you-all? Then, from the bushes beside you, you hear a trill sound. Cheese-bur-ger! Cheese-bur-ger!

Recognize these bird calls? With spring underway, brush up on your bird identification skills by visiting the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website. That way, on your next outing, you can easily recognize the familiar sounds of a barred owl or chickadee.
