April is Wildlife Month at the BC SPCA! See if you can stump
your friends and family with these wacky and wonderful wildlife facts.

Clue: One of these nocturnal (awake during the night)
mammals can eat its weight in insects in one night. (This works out to about
500 bugs an hour.)
Answer: Bats
|
|
Clue: Got milk? These baby sea mammals drink at least 100
litres of milk from their mothers every day for six to eight months. That would
be the same as you drinking 25 jugs of milk a day!
Answer: Blue whales
|
|
Clue: These birds, common in cities, use the Earth’s
magnetic fields – not their eyes – to know where to fly.
Answer: Pigeons
|
|
Clue: These large mammals give birth while sleeping.
Answer: Grizzlies and black bears (the cubs are born and nurse while their
mother hibernates)
|
|
Clue: Being bitten by one of these insects is an itchy
affair! But the females need the blood of other animals (including humans) to
feed their young.
Answer: Mosquitos

Want to know how you can help wildlife? Check out these past
Bark! magazine articles.
And remember: Wild
animals aren’t pets! Landing in Kids
Club members’ mailboxes later this month, the spring issue of Bark! tells the story of Audrey, a
turtle who never should have been a pet. Plus, Bark! readers will get a special pull-out “Wild Lives” poster to
spread the word about why exotic animals aren’t
house pets.
Ready for a week you’ll never forget? Registration is open
now for BC SPCA Among Animals summer camps
in the Lower Mainland and Victoria.
At camp, you’ll learn a ton about animals, play games, do
crafts and make new friends. And best of all? You’ll get to spend some hands-on
time with animals every day!
Summer camps will take place at 16 locations in total, so
check back to spca.bc.ca/camp to see
if a camp will be offered in your area.
Can’t wait until
summer? This month, SPCAs in Penticton, Maple Ridge and Vancouver are offering
Wild Things youth workshops. Check it
out!
This just in! In honour of Wildlife Month, we’re giving away
three wildlife novels donated by Orca Book Publishers!
Every new Kids Club
member who signs up in April will be entered in the draw – and three lucky
winners will receive this extra-special prize.
Along with their one-year subscription to Bark! magazine, new members also receive a
full Kids Club kit when they sign up. The kit includes an official membership
card, collector button and exclusive activity sheet with the Kids Club Five
Freedom Pledge!
April’s Furry
Friend of the Month is Amber,
a one-year-old Chihuahua cross.
Amber started out her life in Prince Rupert, but took a ride with our Drive for
Lives program to West Vancouver, where she is currently living in a foster
home. Before Amber can be adopted, she needs heart surgery. She is expected to
make a full recovery and will be a great dog for a lucky family! Amber loves
playing with people, other dogs and her toys. She’s a real sweetheart.
Please note: Amber was available for adoption at the time this article was written,
and may have found her forever home since then. Visit the BC
SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently looking for homes.
