Cats: The Purr-fect Companions

At the BC SPCA, we take care of lots of different animals, including dogs, horses, rabbits and rats. But did you know that more than half of all the animals waiting for their forever homes are cats?

This month, we want to tell you about just a few of these lovely cats.

 Garth

Garth has been through a lot! Found as a stray in a school parking lot, he came to the SPCA in need of some TLC. Now that his coat has been cleaned and his wounds have healed, five-year-old Garth needs a forever family that will appreciate his mischievous, playful personality! Garth is available for adoption at the Comox SPCA.

 Jem

Jem is a typical kitten, in all the best ways. She is curious and energetic, and she loves to play! Jem and her littermates were found abandoned at the SPCA when they were only a few weeks old. After a stint in foster care, they are now ready for permanent homes! Jem and her siblings can be adopted at the Richmond SPCA.

Hunter

Three-year-old Hunter was brought to the SPCA when his previous guardians were moving and couldn’t take him with them. Hunter likes other cats, toys and scratching posts. He dislikes going outside, so needs an indoor-only home! Hunter can be adopted from the South Okanagan/Similkameen SPCA.

Please note: Garth, Jem and Hunter were available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found their forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to discover more cats currently looking for homes.

Take Action!

Want to take action for animals this summer?

One of the biggest concerns facing pets this time of year is the heat – especially being left in the car alone on a hot day.

Dog in hot carWhy is leaving a pet in a hot car a problem? Because animals can overheat very quickly! On a warm day, it can take just 10 minutes for the temperature in a parked car to reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill a pet.

What can you do to prevent this from happening to an animal? Help us spread the word about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles when it heats up outside! You can even print your own brochures and posters. Take the posters to places like malls, grocery stores and community centres, and ask permission to put them up.

Learn more about what to do if a dog suffers from heatstroke.

Animal Jokes 'n' Riddles

At the BC SPCA Kids Club, we love to laugh almost as much as we love animals! This month, we’re celebrating our feline friends with a bit of cat-themed comedy:

Q: Where did the kittens go for their school field trip?
A: The mewseum!

Smiling kittenQ: Why don’t cats make good story-tellers?
A: They only have one tail!

Q: What is a cat’s favourite colour?
A: Purrple!

Have an animal joke or riddle you’d like to share? Send it to kids@spca.bc.ca, along with your first name and city, and you could be featured in a future issue of e-Kids Mews!letter.
