Back to School!

A new school year has begun! Are you excited to have a new teacher and classroom? What are you most looking forward to learning about this year?

If you have a school project on animals and you’re looking for some ideas, our Animal Issues pages have lots of past Bark! and AnimalSense magazine articles about pets, wildlife and farm animals!

If you’re doing a presentation on animal abuse or neglect, learn about the different types of animal cruelty. If you’re researching a report on endangered wildlife, read about sharp-tailed snakes or discover why frogs are disappearing. Are you learning about farm animals? Find out about some of the different issues that affect them.

There’s something for every subject at school! For math, calculate the number of kittens that can result from one unspayed female cat. For science, explore why antifreeze is toxic to pets. For art, make a bottle cap crow. And if you need a debate topic, how about indoor vs. outdoor cats!

Articles are added regularly, so check back often.

Animal Jokes 'n' Riddles

Our jokes are headed back to school this month, too! Crack up your friends on the playground with these puns.

What do you do if your dog eats your spelling homework?
Take the words right out of his mouth!

Why are fish so smart?
Because they live in schools!

What do caterpillars study at school?
Moth-ematics!

How do bees get to class?
They ride the school buzz!

How did the cow do her multiplication homework so quickly?
She used a cow-culator!

Thank you!

Paws for a Cause

Thank you to everyone who came out for the 2013 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause this past weekend!

Along with a walk to celebrate everything that animals mean to us, each event included lots of fun activities, such as agility courses, face painting and plenty of treats for humans and pets!

Thousands of supporters collected pledges for the animals this year. We're still tallying the numbers, and you'll find the final results, including the announcement of the top youth fundraiser, in the next Bark! magazine!

Happy Endings

Magoo

This month’s featured Happy Ending animal is Magoo the Coonhound!

Magoo found his forever home after a stay at the Kelowna SPCA. He is described by his new guardian as “the most loving, sweet, adorable dog that I have ever met!” Magoo likes to visit the dog park and give lots of cuddles and kisses. Congratulations on your happy ending, Magoo!

Do you have a Happy Ending story of your own to tell? We want to hear it! Email us at kids@spca.bc.ca to let us know how your pet is doing in his new home. Include a photo or drawing of you and your companion, too!

Furry Friend of the Month

PJ

September’s Furry Friend of the Month is P.J. the Flemish Giant cross rabbit!

P.J. is a big bunny who will make a wonderful companion for the right family. He is friendly to everyone he meets, including other rabbits, cats and people. P.J.’s likes include eating greens and playing with toilet paper rolls. His dislikes include being chased and living outdoors. P.J. is patiently waiting at the Vancouver shelter for his forever family to come and take him home.

Please note: P.J. was available for adoption at the time this article was written, and may have found his forever home since then. Visit the BC SPCA website to discover more furry friends currently looking for homes.
