Home for the Holidays
All they want for Christmas is a home. The BC SPCA currently has 4,000 wonderful animals in our care who want nothing more than to be part of a loving family.
During December, the SPCA is launching Home for the Holidays – a pet adoption drive to find homes for as many animals as possible.
Please help us by sharing news about animals for adoption with your friends and family – or bring your own new best friend Home for the Holidays.

December 2011 Issue 106

Holiday pet safety
The holidays can be a hazardous time for pets but if you take some simple precautions, you can ensure your animal friends have a safe holiday.
Make sure that Christmas tree ornaments, tinsel and electrical cords are inaccessible. Secure your tree by anchoring it to a wall or the floor.
Avoid having popular but toxic Christmas plants, such as holly, within reach, and never feed turkey bones to your pets.

Donor of the month
For the last 11 years, Nanaimo volunteer Audrey Aquino has operated and administered the branch’s extremely successful donation can program.
Recently, this one-woman program reached the $100,000 mark – funds that go towards the care and protection of thousands of animals.
Audrey’s outstanding achievement would not be possible without thousands of unknown donors as well as local businesses who have supported the program and she would like to share this honour with them. Thank you!

Paw Patter
Ever wonder what fuels Santa’s reindeer for that annual flight?
During the winter, when food is scarce, reindeer feed mainly on lichen. Lichen survives the cold because of its unique combination of algae and fungus.
Thanks to the algae, lichen doesn’t require much sunlight to grow, and the spongy material of the fungus holds up against harsh temperatures.
Reindeer sniff out lichen beneath the snow, uncovering it with their hooves or antlers. Lichen doesn’t contain much protein, but it is high in carbohydrates, providing reindeer with a source of quick-burning energy.
